Retro GCp project: DONE WITH PICS!!!!!!!!!

I've embarked on the "Retro" GCp project! I'm building this for a friend, in part because it's his birthday, and in part because he's driving me all the way to Toronto to see PLAY!, AND bought me VIP tickets to PERSONALLY meet Nobuo Uematsu!

I figured the least I could do was give him some entertainment for the 5 hour ride and something to show off before the show started.

I've dubbed it the GCp Retro because the case is made of half of an old NES. It will be like Turbo Tax 1.0's MKII in the sense that the Gamecube is going to be left completely intact, only mine will be detatchable via a product called Superlock from RadioShack. Here's my progress so far:

Cool random angle

Top of NES plate. The Gamecube itself will go here, conveniently placed in the middle.

Under the NES hatch. This is where I'm shoving the charger jack, power switch, etc.

Front face plate. The screen, controllers, speakers, etc. will be mounted here.

A couple top and bottom views of the case to judge thickness

This is the power switch I'll be using, along with the heatsink for my 7808 (if the damn thing ever gets here!

)

A few extra details are that I'll be painting the thing jet black with glossy Krylon Fusion to match the black Gamecube. I do, however, have one dilemma; should I paint the cartridge door? I like the fact that it has the NES logo, and that would be sweet to have there, but would that throw off the color elsewhere? Also, on that ventlike thing on top of the NES plate; should I paint that black, or leave it white for some diversity? If I left it white and the cart door white, I think it'd look kinda cool. Or should I just say screw it and paint both? Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Thanks, I learn from the best!

But man, that stuff cracks like no other! I ended up having to "drill" the holes using a soldering iron. It dremels easy at least.

I've opted to try keeping the vent and cart door unpainted; if it doesn't look good, I'll just paint over it!

As for more details, they will be sparse right now, as this is a WIP. Soon, though!

If you put tape on the part you are drilling it should help stop the cracking. Try on a scrap part first, though, just in case it doesn't help on that kind of plastic.

Thanks, I'll try that in the future! Fortunately, I got all the holes in the plexi, so I don't need anymore, but I will remember that for later.

Yes, the original intention was to do a full-blown mod and pack everything into this case. Unfortunately, time is against me, and I'd rather have a sure-fire finish then not be done at all. Plus, after some further prying, I found out that he shares his Gamecube with his brother, and he wants it to maintain FULL functionality as a console. Thanks for the compliments, and I'll update with pics soon!

The easiest way to drill holes in plexi is with a dremel accessory, it's like a sanding bit except that it comes to a point. It's pretty small, with a sharply angled tip (not the roundish kind), and will just eat through the plexi. The use the roundish pointy bit to widen the hole.

Just painted the case for the first time! It's pretty much done. The pictures aren't too clear because I snapped them as soon as I was done putting on a layer, but trust me; standing here looking at them, they're breathtaking.

I actually put masking tape on the vent part of the NES to leave it tan, and I'm not painting the door either. It looks cool that way.

Hipgear is. That is what the screen was intended for.

Anyways, sorry. That really doesn't look like a psone screen. O_o
