The Wii is supposed to be able to surf the internet. Also slapping in DVD functionality would make it a very versatile little box. But no, they fail to see the light...

INTERNET BROWSER (Opera) COSTS $$$. They announced it already. This applys to everyone who said something about the free internet garbage.

Ok, so I once again overestimated Nintendo's abilities.

This reminds me of that one Simpsons episode in which Homer discovers his long-lost brother, who owns a car company. All the R&D guys keep telling him what people should want, instead of letting the people tell them what they want.

"People don't want internet gameplay from our console."
"People don't want HD output from our console."
"People don't want DVD playback from our console."

And on and on...sooner or later Nintendo will realize that it isn't one of the top players anymore, and it cannot just step in and set industry standards anymore.

It does cost money but not until next year sometime. It's free till then and by then they will have a hack.

you have no proof that the opera browser for wii will cost anything! ive read that nintendo is in talks with opera about the price and that it may be free or probably at the most a one time payment of a small ammount of money (less than what you would pay for a game, my totally random guess is 10-20$)

[UPDATE] Unfortunately, the Wii browser will not be free. Thursday morning, Nintendo confirmed at its New York Wii press conference that the Opera browsers would have to be purchased via the prepaid Wii points system.

Finally, there's the Internet channel, which is basically just the Opera browser--you'll need to cash in Wii points to purchase it. But the Wii remote does seem uniquely suited to surfing the Web on your couch.

It doesn't say how much it will cost, but it will cost you something.

I remember another system long ago that let you browse the web. It was called the Dreamcast and we all know how that story ended...

Look we're all entiltled to our opinions on these consoles. Jones and I both shake our heads about the Wii, a lot of you love it.

NONE of us have played it yet. I'd like to give it a try, it's just that on paper I don't "get it" The prices seem awfully high for what it is, like most of the cost is the controller. Why not just sell this controller for Gamecube?

Zelda, a month later on Cube than Wii... I shouldn't even have to explain this one. Do the math.

Graphics don't make a good game, but when your system is about 4 years behind in tech, yet only $50 cheaper than an Xbox 360, that gives me pause for concern. Anyone who thought "less than $250" meant 180-200 deserved to be disappointed.

Since this is my site and I'm not part of a gaming news company (ie Gamespy, IGN, 1up.com) I don't have any editors telling me to be inpartial, give things a chance, any of that. I can say things as I see them. (much like The Best Page in the Universe)

Nobody cares when I or anyone else does this to big bad Sony (who are looking pretty stupid to me lately too) but when it comes to Nintendo, it's like a person can't even question them.

As Jones has pointed out, Nintendo, like any company, has done PLENTY of stupid things in the past. So has Sony. So has Microsoft (cough cough WINDOWS ME???) Point is, no company should be beyond ridicule.

Last point - let's say a new Dell computer, with latest features and speed, costs $600. Would you then buy a 2002 model Dell for $500?

k you win jones lol last time i had checked they didnt know yet, i still stand that since it does cost it will be NO MORE than 10-20$ and ben judt because its been thrown around that its a turbocharged GC or about as powerful as an xbox doesnt mean that it isnt more graphically capable than either system, lets wait and see before we pass judgment on something that we have, once again, no way of prooving save for some crappy screenshots and youtube videos

I would take neither of them, I don't like Dell.

I think the reason everyone is more procective of the Wii is that Nintendo always takes risks with this stuff and usually does pretty good. Sony just has a powerhouse with the same name and controller its been using forever.
I am not a fanboy, I have a GBC, N64, PS, and Xbox, so I am not just hating anyone. I did get the PS for free and never play it, so that should be taken off my list...
Personally, I'm gonna wait and see what happens, and then I might buy a used one of the one I like the most in a couple years.

The only reason I defend Nintendo is not because I like them, but because you're usually being one-sided, most of the time at least, such as the Wii60 bashing. "You have a 360 and a Wii, but no games!" Well ok, say you buy a PS3, "You have a PS3, but no games!"

And you say the Wii has 5-year old technology. Since when is gaming all about the specs? I thought it was also the software on it, not to mention the wireless and pointer controllers which the Xbox [1] did not have. Just because the tech specs did not improve over even the Xbox 1, the console has improved from the Xbox 1.

Just the same as I was saying... Some games just appeal to certain persons. Will there ever be Zelda on any none Nintendo system (don't go talking about the CD-I smartass)?

Probably not... I just get the system that appeals to me the most.
And I don't just look at the hardware. I don't need a console that has no games I like (or just 2).
I buy a console to play games not to surf on the fricking internet. I have a pc for that. Sure it's nice to be able to do that, but that's not the point.
That's why I chose a DS instead of a PSP, I have an MP3 player already thank you very much.

I would love to play Halo3 but I probably never will. Same counts for PS3 exclusive games. I chose the console with the most games I like and that's what it is all about....
