I did have one idea I was discussing with Klefmung/mangadood a few days ago, but I won't post it (even though it would work here) because I'd like to keep some of the techniques involved secret.
However…
I know it's been done before, but I was thinking about making an "emergency cable kit" out of Cat5 patches and some adapters. Notable mentions:
•dual-XLR
•single or dual stereo phone (y'know, phone plugs are 1/4" and used for low-end mics and speakers…)
•dual or quad mono phone
•single mono phone w/2 Cat5 (for speakers, though I won't go as far as to suggest Speakons…)
•FireWire (for ?6')
•USB (there ARE adapters that send USB through Cat5, which is what I would use)
•phono (4 could be used, but 2 would be better, since there could be more wires carrying the signal)
•console controller extensions
•single or dual 1/8" stereo miniplug (headphone extension cable)
•dual or quad 1/8" mono miniplug
•S-Video
Then the ones that I've seen:
•VGA
•crossover cable
•modem cable
•null modem cable
•Cisco cable
•serial cable
…and so on.
I think it would also be beneficial to have adapters that work with each other. For example, if you plugged the 1/8" stereo miniplug into the RCA/phono adapter, they'd connect correctly so you could hook up RCA to one end and 1/8" stereo miniplugs to the other.
Examples:
•1/8" stereo miniplugs to phono
•1/8" mono miniplugs to phono
•1/4" stereo miniplugs to phono
•1/4" mono miniplugs to phono
•S-video to phono (dual S-video input, Y/C output through miniplugs)
•1/8" stereo miniplugs to 1/4" stereo miniplugs
•1/8" stereo miniplugs to 1/4" mono miniplugs
•1/8" stereo miniplugs to 1/8" mono miniplugs
•1/4" stereo miniplugs to 1/4" mono miniplugs
Obviously, it takes more than just matching up pins to adapt S-video to VGA (or *gasp* ethernet), so those should probably not be attempted. As for XLR to anything else, I would say no, mainly because you lose the benefits of a balanced cable. It could be done, but it'd be best to use a matching transformer on the other end, THEN adapt to something else.
As for the adapters themselves, I think they should all have one male plug and one female jack for the second signal that could go through the cable (since two short cables might not necessarily reach both places). I know this would involve carrying around more cables, but that's not too bad if you have things coming from and going to the same places. Otherwise, it'd be better to just make more adapters (though this also means you'd need more Cat5 cables).
It may appear as though I've thought most of this out, but the whole thing is so open-ended. There are literally BILLIONS of variations you could make on this, but I think that kits should probably be designed by the people who will use them, not me.
Hmm…
Do any of you think I could make money selling these?

I have an idea for a Wiip involving a wireless infared headband. Think about it, it makes sense...

My x50v can run @ 624Mhz and can use a good deal of it's ram if you use solid state memory for storing files instead of the ram ala Palm pilot.totokan wrote:yeah. hate to break this to you, but;
1) MAME requires way to much power for a PPC
Couldn't you just jury rig something with a 7805 regulator and some batteries or am I talking out the wrong end of my anatomy?2) PPC's don't have powered USB, which you would need for a controller.
