I don't know any calculations or formulas, but a commercial propeller might be better than just hacking up some balsa wood (not as fun though). Or if you still make your own, maybe look some stuff up about the design it should be. And your friend doesn't seem to know what he is talking about, with his theory a flat propeller would create thrust. But I think there is a happy medium, where thrust is high and drag is low.
