Yes Pluto is no longer a planet. The sad thing is the Part in the diner In Spaceballs no longer has relevance

Plus many un-named neighbors. Its part of the belt called Kiepler belt.

In reality, pluto is bigger than anything ever found in the keiper belt, prior to the discovery of 2003UB313. That's why they had to start this whole thing.

Oh, people are always saying it is or isn't a planet. And since some of my school textbooks are ten years old I'm sure that schools will be teaching children about 9 plaents for at least 15 more years.

wasnt there also talk of changing the definition in the other direction which would have made things like some of the asteroids and the moon count as planets?

well, this is the final result of a long conference about the definition of planet. The previous idea (before this final one) was one that included pluto, but also included 2003ub313 and some large asteroids.

This instantly makes all existing school textbooks and most peoples' knowledge of the planets obsolete. <img src="http://benheck.com/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_lol.gif">

Yes, they could have kept Pluto's status as it was, however they would have to name something like 5 more big asteroids in both belts. (I bet they would have called them Mickey, Donald, Goofy... <img src="http://benheck.com/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif"> Disney please don't sue! :o)

But how many asteroids have a natural sattelite orbiting them? (I know Mercury and another planet, Venus I think, don't have moons but they're HUGE)

Oh well, time to come up with a new "planet sentence". (Remember "my very excellent mother just sent us nine pizzas"? No? what the hell are they teaching you kids in school?!)

this is wonderful because when school starts I will be taking astronomy and the books will be instantly wrong. It will be funny seeing my teacher try and come up with a new curriculum with only less that a weeks notice

coming up with another sentence to remember the planets is tough

Hey, no freaking fair, my district never gave us a sentence! Last year, we had to memorize the planets the old fashioned way: memorizing them! (gasp!)

Poor Pluto, they should have kept it a planet. Now I can ask someone to name the planets and they'll be wrong because they'll include Pluto.
