I have a busted Jamma PCB for a puzzle game (forget the name of it), 2 joysticks, a power supply, some buttons. The stuff is easy to find, if you know where to look.

by the way, just incase you didn't know, Jamma games & cabinets are somewhat interchangable, depending on the control panel & if the screen is horizontal or vertical. (TMNT & the Simpsons are both Jamma games)

OMG, simpsons was amazing. We went on a camp trip to this arcade like once a year, and we would always have at least two people on that and on xmen. Those games rocked.

If you really want one, I would suggest building your own with an old PC and MAME. I've been trying to convince my parents to let me, and I've been keeping my eye on garage sales for an old CRT.

Now, I've drawn it out on paper and done some research, and:

1: Get an old PC. Something in the 300 - 900 mhz range would be fine.

2: Get a video card with RCA output and get it working.

3: Install MAME and all of the games you want.

4: Build a cabinet.

5: Controlls:
Alright, first, get an old keyboard that you never want to use again. Then, figure out all of the keys you want to use with your game(s). Build the board with all of the buttons and joysticks, spinners and trackballs that you want (You can order real arcade parts for this online). Now, for the buttons and joysticks, take the wires for all of the switched from the parts, and solder them onto their respective keys on the keyboard.

For trackballs and spinners. You will have to hack apart ball mice for this. You will have to use the motion detectors on the inside to use with the trackball or spinner. There are more descriptive tuts on the internet, and I have no plans to use these parts in my design anyways.

For the coin insert slots, you can either use buttons or coin slots off the internet, depending on whether or not you plan on making the machine free or pay to play (Although, I believe that it is illegal to use MAME for commercial use, but it's fine if you just use it in the house), but it's the same concept as the buttons.

6: Mount the TV in the cabinet so that only the screen is visible, if possible.

7: For power, you can just plug everything on the inside into a power stip. Then plug the power strip into a black extention cord and lead it out of the back of the case so that it looks all nice and pretty.

8: decorate it and add the finishing touches.

I miss those old Konami games. Ninja turtles, and who could forget Sunset riders? Honestly they were really in top form with almost every game released from 1989-92 or so.

Here I've got an old MVS with a few good games--because they're *far* cheaper than AES all around. neo geo freaks get all weird about the home systems/games and boost prices. For other 'arcadey' stuff I also have an older pachinko machine for when I want to annoy the spouse.

but eventually when I get more space, I've always wanted one of the larger atari driving units.
probably one of these:
S.T.U.N. Runner (http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=770)
Vapor TRX (http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=782)
SF Rush 2049 (http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=784)

or, if maintenance doesn't look too bad, pinball might be an option too.
an Elvira and the party monsters or Dr. Who pinball unit maybe. http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=782 http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=738

all my future arcade purchases are a long way off. I wouldn't bother too much with the mame cabs if I were you. I mean mame's okay, but it's not worth building a cabinet for. mainly because mame games just never seem to feel right at all. (though it is a great use for an xbox)

besides, with so many loose arcade boards going in the $10-50 range, do you really save that much money emulating?

If you're looking at this post and it was made before 2008, just ignore it.

I'd like to get an empty cab (more preferably a Defender-ish cab) to make a MAME machine. I'm still at step 1: "Find empty cabinet"

I wouldn't use a Composite monitor, but rather a computer monitor, as most arcade machines use RGB, & VGA is practically the same thing! :P

By the way, MAME has really advanced within the last couple of years...

I would not recommend using a keyboard, it's way too hard to solder to, since it's only some thin plastic, not too much unlike overhead transparencies, with the tracings. Instead, use some game pads, USB is nice as possible, and solder to that instead. Then, use JoyToKey, a program which converts joypad signals to keyboard ones (and even lets you use key combinations, like Alt+F4

Also, look around... you'd be surprised at the monitors you can find for free or very cheap... I got one from work for my cab, ~21", for free. It it a bit blurry with small text, but it is perfect for games and even frontends, I would have no clue looking at it :)

I Got an Easier idea.

1) Get a Sega Dreamcast, one that was made before september 2001.
2) Find a Dreamcast video cable
3) Download Spiffy and the Mame thing for it
4) Download all the roms you can fit on a CD, and use spiffy to build a CDI Dreamcast game image
5) Controlls:
Reposition the controlls to the adverage Neo Geo configuaration. And use the thumb stick as a joy stick.

Dreamcasts are cheaper than a Computer.

Not necessarily cheaper. You can pick up an old junker at a garage sale for 15 bucks if they're really desperate to get rid of it. Besides, a DC is way harder to get ahold of than a PC. Although, if you have an extra one laying around, then go for it.

Also, as for the keyboard thing, If you don't want to bother with a keyboard, you can buy these keyboard encoders that let you plug in your own switches for that are designed for this purpose. The one I saw was USB, and about $10 if I remember correctly. I just put up the keyboard bit because it's easier to get ahold of.

And, actually, I would say that it's probably safer to go with a TV rather than a PC monitor because you can get a bigger one for cheaper. Once again, though, if you have a big monitor available for cheap, then go for it.

I was just about to say that. ALso, keyboards can cause ghosting. A good alternative is to hack an xbox or USB controller.
