Yeah iPods are only really good if your an iTunes adict, otherwise there are other far more feature-rich and expandable mp3 players out there.

well there may be more "feature-rich" mp3 players out there, but iPods, and apple products in general, barely ever break and have good support. They can watch movies and play games if you install iPod linux and also have the scroll wheel, which is a sweet way to navigate songs. Not to mention they have a "look at me, i'm trendy" factor going on too. I would be embarassed to pull out some other mp3 player out.

Hmm looks ok, but it has one major flaw, no click wheel. I know that's not a big thing but I like it. As for the MP3 player you have there if it fills your needs go for it. I will add that you can double the size of the iPod Nano 4GB to 8GB (cost = $89) with that hack on hackaday.

Also before you go nuts about the expantion memory with the micoSD. I just think you need to realize that if you have something saved on it rather then the MP3 player you have the potental to lose the SD card or you could simply forget to have it with you. That's the key draw back to MP3 players with removable media.

i dont have tons of music so if i were going to get an mp3 player i would probably get the mobiblu DAH1500 cube, 1gb and it is slightly less than one square inch in size

I've been perfectly happy with my 3G 20 GB iPod for over two years now. I see no reason to buy a new one just because someone finds an alternative they believe better than the iPod.

Personally, I think that any media device that has less than 10 GB of storage is not worth buying. Even if your music collection is small, it will eventually grow larger than your device can hold. It may seem better to buy a player with only a slightly larger capacity than your music library, but you won't be able to hold your whole library on it for longâ€¦

People should make their own decisions. If they dislike the iPod, they should go buy another player. If they think it's not worth the search for a device they like better, they don't dislike the iPod enough. Don't start with "but they locked me in with their DRM"[/whine] either. If you don't feel up to breaking it, you don't want out badly enough.

Indeed the iPod has much less features as it comes, but when you put some sort of iPod Lnux on it (Podzilla, PZ2, Floydzilla) it unlocks almost astonishing results. Full speed Gameboy emulation, NES emulation in the works of getting better, Doom, Doom 2, etc. Plus, with iPL no iTunes is eeded. Simply use WMP to transfer your songs to it. Simple, no?

I have a 2GB Nano and 2 GB is plenty of space for my music, leagal roms, and other goodies

Guess what I primarily use?

A portable CD player that can handle MP3s. I get 700 MB of music on 1 disc. There isn't much that's worth listening to in my opinion. Besides that's several CD's worth of music on one disc. Carry around 12 CD-Rs and... well you get the idea.

If only I had one that could read MP3s off DVD-RWs...

90 minutes' worth of music per tape. 10 more than on a CD. I used this more than my CD walkman before I picked up the MP3-CD player.

iPods look like fun toys, but for me they're not really practical. I don't need constant electronic audiovisual stimulation to get through the day (but you can probably tell that from the cell phone I carry

).

my cellphone (if i can get service for it) is more oldskool than yours i bet, and about casette walkmans, there is no parallel to the WM ex9

After I got my iPod, I found that it took much less planning to get things to work. Before that, I carried around a nice (though very slow) JVC CD player. No frills, just that, and a regular audio CD (that I would burn). If I was going to be away for a few days, I'd take two or so, but I usually only listened to about 20 songs at any given time.

The problems arose when I wouldâ€¦

a) run out of CD-Rs
b) run out of AAs
c) run out of time (at 4x, CDs take ~15 minutes to make, which I almost never had)

At least that's what I foundâ€¦

The only ipod I ever even considered buying was the Mini... Then they fazed that out and put the nano out.

But isn't M$ or some other company releasing an mp3 player that is about the size of an ipod for about 75$? I remember the hype while back but I'm to lazy to find the article.

I also don't like Ipods because of apple's blatant lies that they invented the mp3 player. In Apple's defense, I don't think they ever said that they invented the MP3 player; they certainly set some new standards though.

Around a few days before the iPod came out, one of my friend's sisters was having problems trying to put songs on her Archos Jukebox 6000. Because I was known to fix computer-related problems, she left me a CD (a fraction of her library), the Jukebox and all of its parts. It was the basic representation of a hard drive-based mp3 player before the iPod: simplistic interface (no ID3 tags, just filenames), USB 1.0 interface (slooooow), and four 1500 mA NiMH AAs. It was also very chunky, weighing about as much as a 10 CD spindle, and a little smaller than a 3" pocket TV. Plus, it was almost impossible to create and maintain a connection between it and your computer. I struggled for a bit, got it to work (barely), and sent it on its way back to her.

The iPod basically followed in the steps of the Mac (which had been released over 17 years prior):

1) *awe*
2) "how do we kill it?"

Every player nowadays is designed to compete with the iPod, and some even try to mimic its interface.

Every GUI nowadays has a core interface (desktop, menus, files) that was started at Xerox, and finished at Apple.

The difference at this point in time stems from the fact that Microsoft knew about the Macintosh well before its release (they were the principal 3rd party developer), and made a way for people to acquire the same sort of interface for less money.

I spent little over 6 months looking at all sorts of MP3 players. Everything from flash card based players, to hard drives, from the Creative Zen series to Ipods. I finally settled on the iPod becase of a number of reasons, but one of the key reasons were that I can use it as a hard drive and not have a seperate partition for data files.

Also usbcd36 is completely correct in that, don't start stupid arguements about how the iPod sucks.

Also on the point of Apple and MP3, they can't legitamity say they made the MP3 player as MP3 codec is well over 10 years old. The only thing Apple could say is "We made this decades portable audio player". And sure they weren't the first but they were early enough for it to be accepted and the fact is that they hold over 50% of the market so they got it mainstream.
