The reason the DS' battery lasts longer is because of it's extremely weak processing power and very poor graphics engine. The poor visuals and sound quality is compensated with longer lasting battery life.
Those are biased opinions rather than facts. That comparison table was obviously composed by a PSP fan.

Careful about the GP2x. How much do you really want it? How much will you really want to play those old games? I got it, and suddenly I began to ask myself why; I've played the emus before, and that cursed digital stick is just annoying. So, away it went, to someone on this forum.

I've had a GP2x, PSP, and DS (Lite, now). Only the DS Lite remains in my posession. Between you and me, it's really all about the games. The DS has games I enjoy, the PSP and GP2x don't. The DS fits my style, and the others don't. I find the GP2x too lacking, and the PSP too fragile. Anyone who owns a PSP WILL worry about putting it unprotected in their pocket, so long as they aren't swimming in money or mentally retarded.

Thats the way I see it. (hugs DS and Animal Crossing)

EDIT: Oh, and lets get one obvious thing straight: the PSP is a more powerful platform, period, end of story. That's it. The chart is correct about that. The PSP is stronger, with a more powerful CPU, more ram, and superior graphics abilities. Sony crammed a PS2 into a portable, while Nintendo crammed an (improved) N64 into a portable. However, good graphics a game do not make.

So true. I still haven't looked into purchasing a gp2x, as I don't have anything close to the funds I need for it, and I don't know If I want to dedicate my income to it.

As for the DS, all the DS games I have played so far are amazing; though some of them are short, others are challenging, all of them are great because they find new ideas (surgurey, lawyers, warioware, dogs) to make it really fun.

you know what? you spam........... A LOT. in 15 days you acumulated 305 posts most of which contain so much spam its not funny. I mean, what the hell does Monty Python have to do with the PSP and DS. STOP SPAMING COPULATE SPAMMING!!!!

Anyways with that out of the way back on topic:
IMHO,
DS:
Fun games of different genres that are totally new, fun and a fresh experience.
Cool new input experience to the games.
All the nintendo games!!!! Mario, Zelda, metroid, animal crossing warioware etc...
One problem for me is that most games are just short bursts of fun that quickly die.
PSP
Plays most of the most popular franchises as they are on consoles (GTA, Daxter, Burnout, etc.)
Great big vibrant screen,
Amazing portable graphics
But although the ports are really cool, (cmon you cant deny GTA, Madden, Splinter Cell and all the other popular franchises on the go isnt cool :) ) you can play the exact same things, bigger and better on consoles. One more problem for me is the..............1 ANALOG STICK!

the haerdware aspect of this was actually right on. but the statements about the battery were less than accurate, because most of the difference is the fact that the psp has optical disc media and DS has flash.
I have a PSP and not a DS, but I was on the verge, for a while, of selling my PSP and buying a DS. I was very unhappy that I had no good games to choose from, but then I heard that FFVII crisis core and Kingdom Hearts were coming to PSP, then mix that with the PSone emulator service, and my PSP barely escaped the Gamestop shelf.

In the handheld market, better does not always win. Gamegear was better graphically, but had horrible battery life, and was bulkier, and had less games. (see some similarities here?) Similar thing with the neogeopocket, and other handhelds. Gameboy always wins! BWAHAHAHAH!

Yay GP2x questions!

How many of those emulators run (at or at least close to) full speed? Playing games at 35-50% speed doesn't appeal to me.

Does this thing play mp3s; and how much space, if any, does it have internally?

the internal mem for the 2X is pretty much useless except for firmwares, i think 32 mb but if you use it you can potentially brick it. or at least that is what the deal was last time i checked.

yeah it can do mp3s
im not to sure about the snes emu now, i havnt checked on it for awhile
but NES, Genesis, Neo Geo, gamegear/master system, and pcengine are all good speeds

the Neogeo emulater is the one i used the most and the genesis emu is near perfect

i really need to get on the gp32x forums and update some of the emulaters on my sd card and my firmware, im still running 1.4

Last time I checked (several months ago, when I still had my GP2x), Snes emulation ran darn near full speed, depending on which game you were playing. Super Mario World was very playable with only a frameskip of 3, or auto, and with sound enabled. Genesis emulation is spot-on perfection, except for a few compatability issues, full speed with sound. Classic FPS's like Doom and Hexen make an appearance, all full speed of course. Quake 1 ran at about 11 FPS, but some massive improvements were in the works. The Playstation emulator was running FFVII at something like 10 fps, without sound. LAst time I checked, a long time ago, it was still very slow and featured terrible compatability.

What I want to get into is homebrew for the DS Lite. I haven't looked into it in a while, but getting Genesis onto my DS would be the best of both worlds.

Triton wrote:PSP:
Pros:
+Has nice screen gp2x's lcd is more vibrant and less prone to ghosting
+Plays Music and Movies and views Pictures so does gp2x
+Web browser for FREE so does gp2x with a bit of work
+Easy gamesave managment not sure what you mean by this
+Good selection of original games gp2x does to, WAY more so than psp, and all free right now, a few commercial games in the works
Cons:
-Too many ports
-Screen is easily scratched (cover fixes this) screen cover is good, replacements are cheap
-Web browsing capability limited same with 2x, no native browser yet, only links and qtopia opera
-Movies must be in specific formats divx and xvid, can add codecs
-WAY to easy to play ripped games (or is this a plus?) a plus for sure lol
-Flash memory takes a beating with all these 'updates'[/b] flash ram is good for a TON of writes, gp2x gets firmware upgrades but to fix things not break them[/b]
-Portable disc drive=low battery life no stupid propretaty formats, sd cards are cheap, uses AAs!

my $00.02 psp to GP2x comparison here are some more misc facts on gp2x
=====GP2X====
+currently has SIXTY-ONE emulators, not all different systems but most are. list of emulators here
+archive has 192 freeware games listed, 5 commercial game demos, 20 interpereters (ported games EG doom, duke 3d, hexen, quake, flashback) and a lot more other stuff!
+its linux so it supports frontends like qtopia and x11
+has a very active and friendly (for the most part) dev community
+100% open source! no evil corporration trying to ruin your fun
+get over 5 hours of battery life on 2500mah AAs!
+ after shipping and tax it costs 4$ more than a psp BEFORE tax! if you buy a gp2x and a 1gb SD card it will cost you $226.45 this SD card a psp with 1gb memory stick pro duo 1gb will cost 253.665 cheapest one on pricewatch and thats not plus games and whatnot!

ive got a bunch more where this came from, feel free to ask for more info! if you cant tell i am 100% in favor of the gp2x over the psp, the psp is ok for commercial games and whatever but if your into homebrew and emulation gp2x is where the good stuff and value is at!
I'm quite aware the gp2x 'ownz' (for lack of a better term). I just don't have the money to purchase one now, nor will anytime soon as it all goes into my computer. The gp2x is better than a PSP hands down, except when it comes to commercial titles, of course. PSP=95% commercial games. Gp2x=0% commercial.
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

Okay, my revised version of how I look at this.

Nintendo has been making consoles and portables for over a decade. They have had that time to design, tweak, the Game Boy series. They said, "Let's make it 3D so it's like you're in the game!" They released the Virtual boy. It sucked. So they made another. And another. Finally they created the Nintendo DS.

Sony's story is much much different. The PlayStation consoles were very popular. People really liked them. So Sony though, "What if we made a portable PlayStation! A PlayStation Portable!!!" And so the PSP was born.

So really, the PSP is a portable version of a console, while the DS is really the new Game Boy. Like I said, like a Laptop and a Pocket PC. A laptop is a lot like a desktop PC. Much like the PSP is like the PS2. The DS on the other hand, is like the Pocket PC... Or a Palm (Touch screen!). It's like a PC... But way smaller, and not as powerful, but still very useful!

And about fanboyism.... Here's a story. I grew up on Nintendo. My first system was an N64. Then the Gamecube, then the SNES, and then the NES. (Great order, right? ) I never owned an Xbox, or a PlayStation, or a Sega or anything else. I got a Gameboy Color when it came out, then a DS when it came out, and then a DS lite when it came out. Am I a fanboy? It sounds like I am, but I really don't care about it that much. If someone gave me a PS2, I'd say, "Thanks!" And go play it. I think Nintendo fanboys are like that, generally.

Now, the Sony Fanboy. Got a PlayStation. Got the PS2. Got the PSP. Got the PSone. Got the PStwo. Give him a DS and he will more than likely say, "EW! THAT'S GAY!" Or something like that.

Why? You tell me. Maybe it's because Nintendo fanboys grow up on Mario and fun non-violent games like that and Sony Fanboys grow up on violent games. Maybe.

Okay, one more, and I'm going. When I got my DS lite, I was uber excited. I was one of the first people I know to get one. I wanted to bring it to school the next day but my mom was worried. She thought that someone might steal it. I told her, "Mom, only a Nintendo Fanboy would steal a DS lite. And Nintendo Fanboys don't steal." It's the truth as far as I'm concerned. When the PSP2 comes out, don't bring it to school. Sony fanboys will be all over you.

My view of it.

-Super, not changing his sig any time soon.
If you're looking at this post and it was made before 2008, just ignore it.

It's probably already been mentioned (I just scanned the big BIG BIG BIG BIG posts), but the comparison is very unfair. They purposely leave out details about the PSP and DS to create a biased comparison of the PSP and DS.

For example, the DS is said to have an 8 KB Instruction Cache, and a 4 KB Data Cache, whereas the PSP is only said to have an "I-Cache, D-Cache"

And the biased wording used:
The reason the DS' battery lasts longer is because of it's extremely weak processing power and very poor graphics engine. The poor visuals and sound quality is compensated with longer lasting battery life.
The lower battery life is compensated by high quality visuals, powerfull processer and graphics engine, and extremely good sound quality on the PSP speakers.
(Note the mis-spelled word "processer." This indicates this was made by some guy who can't even spell making tech comparisons between two systems.)

Also:
PSP Inputs/Outputs
- USB 2.0
- Memory Stick Pro DUO Port (Known Formats: 32mbs, 128mbs, 256mbs, 512mbs, 1Gig, 2Gig, 4Gig) (Wow thanks for listing that...)- Extension Port
- Stereo Head Phone Out
- Wireless LAN(802.11)
- InfraRed (Infrared WHAT?)

DS Inputs/Outputs
- Microphone + Voice recognition
- Wireless LAN(802.11)
(Missing headphones, headset ports. Clearly this guy doesn't even OWN a DS...)

Kurt makes a good point.

And super camera man, I wasn't offending your sig. I was talking about the VG Hippies. Umm, the ds isn't the newest gameboy. The gameboy franchise ended with the sp. The micro was a failure IMO. An example:

Gamecube - Wii
Would you say that the Wii is a gamecube 2? No, because its only backward compatible with the gamecube games.

Many people say(and I don't blame them) that the DS is the newest gameboy. At the beginning of the ds, the second port was only used for gba games, and yet on the horizon we are sailing to, is that the bottom slot is for accsesories.

SS

(BTW: Nice work on "Don't mess with the n64" Can you really make mario dizzy?)
