Wiring up a LM317t

Ok, I have absolutly NO clue how to wire up the LM317t thing. What all do I need? I have the 240 and 390 ohm things. I don't understand the diagrams. and, I have no perf board.

Here's a better (no offense, Skyone

) calculator where you can enter any two of the variables (like R1 and Vout) to get R2. Just remember to wire it like in Skyone's diagram, not the other calculator.

ok there is something I have wanted to know...

What are the differences between the LM and the TI converters?

is either one more efficient? Is it easier to hook up? Is there a heat consideration?

The TI converters are switching regulators whereas the LM thingy is linear. So the TI is more efficient.

Edit: Oh and less heat too. (on the TI)

yeah, the LM317 burns the extra voltage into heat....so it's less effecient

Sky, I like yours better. Its easier to understand. But which way does r1 go? I dont understand how the resisters work.

Er, resistors are non-polar, so they go either way.

I swear one time I saw a polarized resistor. It wasn't a diode or anything, it really was a resistor! Honest!

But ya, generally they are non-polarized and can go either way. The weird one I saw was just... weird.
