A suggestion about users playing moderator

Well, as this is stated in the rules thread, I would like to inform the moderators that on very professional and well maintained forums, all the members are moderators. Now, let me explain how that works. Say there is a spammer or a constant off topic poster, if seen fit a member should privately message that member to quit it and warn him or her not to spam go off topic, whatever. After several people have privately messaged a member,
and this person will not stop doing what he/she is doing, they report it to an administrator or the forum or a moderator (in the case of this forum). This is just an idea to consider so that when the moderators don't catch people who need to be punished, the users (who are on most of the time) can catch these
people in the act and solve the problem. Not that you guys aren't doing a great job already, but it would make this forum a little more professional. Now I can't say if some 11 year old might come on the forums and throw a hissy fit and report that person because of a joke or something that he couldn't take, But I just think this would be a great system if everyone respected it.

Please, I would love to hear your thoughts about this idea.

There seems to be some confusion as to what mods and admins can do. (This isn't just you, people have asked me to ban people before...) Here is a list of the ranks and what they are capable of. Each rank can do everything the rank above it can.

Guests:
-read the forums

Members (you):
-create new threads
-post in threads that are not locked.

Moderators:

-lock threads
-move threads
- delete threads
-split threads
-edit anyone's post
-delete any post
-create polls

... but only in the forums they moderate. (For example I am not a moderator in the SNES forum, so I have member permissions there. All mods have mod permissions in F42.)

Administrators (Ben and gannon):
-ban people
-create new forums
-create usergroups
-everything else that has to do with the forums but not access the server via FTP (except Ben. He has FTP access. Duh.)

Now, that system would really go against the "don't play moderator" rule. Instead of yelling at the individual (which causes trouble around here half the time), they should report the problem to a moderator. Then the offending indivisual will be dealt with accordingly. Having everyone yell at the person responsible makes it much more difficult for us to keep track of who did what so we can put them into the Warn, Warn, 3 day ban, 1 week ban, permaban system.

That system may work elsewhere, but that's not how we work here. I'm just not convinced.

However, if we ever update to phpbb 3.0 (it's currently in beta form), it includes a "report" function. This puts a small "report" link in each post, so the mods and admins get a list of threads/posts that people either believe to be against the rules or offended by.

FTP = File transfer protocal

Allows you to upload files to servers

I guess because he is cool, he knows this stuff, and Ben wanted help. He was a mod, all you people that haven't been here forever, haha at you!

I believe that is true, the reason Black Six isn't and Gannon is now, Black Six is busy with reality. Black Six isn't here as much as Gannon is and Gannon also knows PHP scripting and how to admin a phpBB database like what this forum is. So it was only natural.

and plus, may I add look at your post count and look at mine. Also observe the dates that show when we joined....
