I've always wanted to run a movie theater...and I have the sound system to do it!

I'd say you could have an outdoor thing. Make it a drive-in type of movie theater. I know people like those.

From a business perspective your idea is indeed sound. I'd choose to do something more like "The People's Theatre," sorta the Panera Bread of movie theatres- something old laid out anew. You could involve the audience in the choosing of what movies you show, and it could be anything from classics to anime. It could be a social forum of types, with a nice meeting place where you can sit down, have some refreshments, and talk with friends. Basically, you'd need to integrate your indy theatre into the town or surroundings; become a part of the community.

Oh, and to those of you who point out the illegality of public DVD showings, your taking NES_fanatic's idea far to literally. The actual point was that he would get ahold of a more modern, digital media, not specifically a DVD. The licensing fees for much older movies, stored on modern media, would be just a fraction of the cost of todays current big-ticket films.

i like the idea a lot but i would be wary of just putting out game systems to play, you dont want your consoles/games walking out do ya? unfortunatly some people are like that

but i like the idea of a hang out/entertainment place with a theatre room or 2 for playing old movies (or MST3K!) anime etc, give the people what they want, have a gaming room and mebe an area for hosting lan parties and stuff like that, if somewhere outside of town buy a large empty lot and setup like a paintball course or outdoor screen for "movies on the lawn" type things in the summer time i have a ton of ideas, but like i said before this kind of thing requires a large initial investment and wont pay out very fast unfortunatly you could always do stuff like contests for prizes and raffles and crap as well, people love that kind of stuff

throw a MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) in there as well!!!
but only have OLD games on it (1942,Pac-Man,pong etc.)

Heres one idea...
you could split up the week into each day having its own genre Example:

MONDAY-COMEDY
TUESDAY-HORROR
WEDNESDAY-CLASSIC
THURSDAY-ACTION
ect.

The only thing about this is this... for this too be trully succesful your going to need a good advertisment capaign. Your going to also want Parents to drag their kids to movies they loved and inturn have their kids WANT to go back!

MAYBE Get a local commercial
Put fliers up in the surrounding towns.
And for the GRAND OPENING you are going to want ONE THING something that will make them take the Hook,line and sinker!

Maybe this:
the first people in the first movie get a card worth 2 free movies.A card with "ONE FREE LARGE POPCORN"

for the arcade idea:
One of the best things(about an arcade) in my opinion is how everything is dark and mostly lightened by dim lights and the machines themselves.
Any lights they do have are flashing. HERES MY IDEA.
Do the arcade machine thing but have it in a dark room.
All movie theaters i go to have it right by the concession (sp?) stand.

Thank you all so much for the positive feedback!

I haven't been able to post here since I've been gine all day, but I like the direction in wich this is going...
It had already occurred to me about the legal issues for rescreening a movie from DVD. To get some questions answered about it I emailed the manager of the Music Box, a theatre that does the same thing basically.

I thought about "themes" for the theatre too, but the movies I'm going to use are basically from the twentieth century overall, and no single theme says "twentieth century". Though the idea did occur to me of having a long mural/timeline thing on the lobby wall.

As for advertising, I'd get a theatre with a Marquee (sp?) to display movies, run times, and news. There would be posters, a Grand opening, and a website. People will be encouraged to join the online forums to give input, and talk about what movies should be put on the roster.

yes that is another great idea. do you actually plan on doing this? if you do, im moving near you!
also, you could do things like show all the movies in a series. i would definetly go! like back to the future (i watched all three of them before) Lord of the rings (this to), starwars (i would definetly go to see that) and rocky. i dont know that people would stay that long but i would.

Okay, let's pretend all legal licencing issues don't exist for now, as there are many you would need to acquire.

I love the idea, and I think it will take off if you do everything right. Here are my suggestions.:

-- With Ben's permission, run Port Washington every so often.

-- Have a few MAME cabinets and set them up so that people can select which games they want to play.

-- Have a Stepmania machine! (You can set it up to where it works like an arcade machine. With coin input and everything.

-- Love the idea of the game tournaments. The anime club I go to does that every other Saturday. We have one room with anime playing in, and one room with videogames. Videogames + projector = AWESOME!

(We actually usually just play games for fun, but we had a tournament once... I won second in the "Classic Grand Prix", my brother one first (He won an SNES, three games and a controller.

), and he also won second in the Super Smash Brothers Melee tournament.)

-- Please show anime. Anime on a 20 foot screen in high-def is exactly what this country needs.
