Viewing angle weirdness (PSOne screen).

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Viewing angle weirdness (PSOne screen).

Post by Kyosho »

When I got my first PSOne LCD many months ago, I hooked it up to my PSOne and was disappointed. I couldn't hold it at any one specific [up/down] angle so that the entire screen was clear and vibrant. I could only get most of the top portion, most of the bottom portion, or just the central area, based on the angle I held it. Titlting it so it was slightly more vertical than straight-on, I could get it so the entire screen looked even, but the colors would be really washed out. This problem never went away. I just figured there was nothing I could possibly do about it and that this was normal.

Flash forward to the NESp I bought from vgacollector, and rebuilt. I had no such problems with its screen. I could hold it at an angle where the entire screen looked great. Finally I understood why everyone here loved the PSOne LCD so much.

Here's some details on the screens: Both still have the cathode. The brightness mod has not been done on either of them. The only difference between them is that the one in the NESp is soldered directly to the board for composite, while the PSOne's is using the board/connector that came with it, which I understand inputs RGB.

Is it possible that RGB itself is the problem? I just don't see how that could affect viewing angle. Is there something else that could possibly be wrong with the first screen to affect the viewing angle like that?

Also, in general, regardless of this issue, are there ways of increasing the viewing angle? I assume not, though I've heard doing the LED mod can help. Is this true?
