I still think the coolest mod to hard drives are the mod to make them speakers. I should look on digg to find the article again, I have 2 10GB hard disks I can sacrafic.

Generally, hard-drives made Pre-'95 are this size. You can find them in just about any machine thats running Windows 3.1 or below...

Sounds like a minicomputer or mainframe hard drive. Any labels or logos on it?

Are you sure you didn't mean Pre-'86 and running Windows 2.0?atari2600a wrote:Generally, hard-drives made Pre-'95 are this size. You can find them in just about any machine thats running Windows 3.1 or below...

5.25" formfactor drives in computers, with the exception of the Quantum Bigfoots, went extinct shortly after the IBM AT.

I've got an aincent Conner 40 meg HD. By some miracle it worked! I found Microsoft Works 2.0 (or 1.0...) and some program called Family Tree Maker on it. FTM is full of someone's information too! See kids, don't put your personal info on a hard drive; some guy could pull your hard drive out of a trash pile and get it all!
I would definitely make that thing into a hard drive speaker. I did it with an old 40 gb Seagate that didn't work (I applied power and nothing happened. I put it ina PC and it didnt' show up on the POST screen). The sound quality is what you'd expect from such a device. You may need to glue a piece of foam in the drive, like I did, to keep the head from parking.
Edit: I have a Quantum Bigfoot.

I seem to remember American Science and Surplus selling some sort of electromagnet-gun thingy specifically for wiping hard rives and floppies. And yes i remember seeing a junked computer with one of those drives it at one point.
