I have a Nomad, but...

But I have no battery pack or adaptor for it. I would love to be able to modify it into something more... practical, anyways. Any ideas?

Well really batteries shouldn't be an issue, the system should run on 6 AA batteries (best to use Ni-MH), and the PSU (Power Supply Unit) you should be able to find a connector that will work as the sytem can use 7-10v input. For the PSU you can go to RadioShack and get a multi connector that would work, and be sure it's under 12v as something that high chould harm the system.

As for modifying it... Ah, you should see if you can get the first play controlls out to a standard controller plug. If you did that you can make a very small Genesis. Add a battery pack and you could take it in the car or anywhere a TV is. I know that's going backwards but I don't know if you'd want to change the video output from RGB to Composit and install a new screen (probibly with LED mod).

The Nomad takes the same power adapter as a series 2 Genesis. If you're really brave, you could try to do an LED backlight conversion. There is no reason to change te screen though, it's a quality unit.

You cannot have"any" voltage from 8-12V input into the nomad, and you cannot just place batteries directly into the system (without modifying a new gampack). The Sega Genesis 2,3, Nomad, and Game Gear all use the same 10V @.85A AC/DC power adapter. Log onto Radioshack and search for sega Genesis. Look for the power adapter that matches these settings, it is about 5 dollars, or look on ebay, there are tons of these for a few dollars. Remember, EBAYers will say only for "this" system, but any of these system adapters will work.

As far as modification, PLEASE DON"T HARM SUCH AN AWESOME PORTABLE!! But if you must, the LED mod is basically the only thing you can do to it besides crating a converter from the mega Gear converter and the Mastersystem-Genny converter, so you can play GameGear games on the Nomad...but I don't know how probable that is.

Reason I say modify it is that the screens tend to go or be bad. Like orange pixels, dead pixels, cracked screen, or something like that. If your unit is like that then you might as well go and get a new screen, one that will likely use less entergy.

Yes, It's Mr. (SmartAss) Shane, well, I'm not going to accept 'advice' from a guy who goes to RADIOSHACK to get classic gaming adapters. Go to the link and you're read that the voltage input is a safe 9-10V. and also in brackets: Same as Genesis/Megadrive 2, 'nuff said. So, I"m not seeing (your avatar: 4th word) as to how it won't work. Also, take it on notice that 6 AA's powered it at 9V., and that's what the adapter outputs in DC power...also, let's see a bit MORE into this, no? It's the same 850 mA, so just see into that, OK?

The first thing I'd do is replace the screen, or at least do the LED mod. I think the Nomad screen is not TFT, so colors would probably look muddy and the screen would blur. (Unless it's a TFT screen after all... then just LED mod it.) If it has the crappy kind of screen, I suggest using the Nomad motherboard and an LED-modded PSone screen together, especially if the nomad board puts out RGB.

Does the Nomad draw less power than a Genesis v2?

about screen:
It uses an LCD but it is of very low quality. Also the plastic covering the screen gets scratched in no time.

about power consumption:
I dunno... according to wikipedia it does, but it uses 9V, if you run it at 7,5V it will probably use more (around 1000mA that will be). Don't forget that a nomad uses 6AA batteries for 2hours (just looked up that a wonderswan runs 40 hours on 1AA

).

Well if the screen suck it sounds like it's a passive matrix display, which basicly means that it doesn't very the speed of refreashing pixels and leaves a very poor display for fast movement (i.e. Sonic and such). So yeah either buy a replacement 3" LCD that can take RBG or do as Bicostp suggested and connect it to a nice big PSone screen.

Umm...it's the third word, No the AC/DC power adapter outputs 10V @ .85A. Where is there any need to be so abrupt in your responces when you have no reason? Most people can act maturely in a forum where people help one-another, but you have a history in doing the opposite of that!

Anyways, Radioshack is an option if you don't like ebay, or want a brand new AC/DC adapter! But please, don't mutilate an awesome system like that. Oh, by the way, it is a Passive matrix LCD, but is very nice for it's time!
PS, the Nomad doesn't draw less power on the AC adapter, however does draw quite a bit of amperage with the backlight LCD screen!
