Case Fan laptop cooler?

Post by Joes2Silly »

Well my sister has a laptop, and she likes playing Civ4 on it but it overheats and freezes sometimes so I thought Id get a laptop cooler. Sadly I dont want to spend $20 on one so I thought "ill just find something, put it at a slant, and hook up two case fans!" So I was wondering if I could hook something like this up to a usb port :?:

Well, that one does use a 5 volt line, and USB ports do output 5 volts. I don't remember which pin exactly, but it shouldn't be hard to figure out with a pinout on googleland. Keep in mind, fans will take a lot of draw, especially 2 of them.

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

I believe USB 2.0 ports can put out up to 500mA, so you 'ought to be able to power any fan(s) you want from it.

To keep mine ICE COLD (Its a IBM Thinkpad 2004 Edition with Fingerscanner), all I do is raise it off the table, so air can flow.
