Post by Turbo Tax 1.0 »

hey i just got to a best western in albequerque, i have been in philmont scout ranch in New Mexico for two weeks and hiked over 50 miles with a forty lb pack on during that time. it was a great experience, but i am glad to back at some place where i can at least sleep in a real bed. my crew is catching a flight and i should be home ~1am tommorrow.

is anybody else here a scout, or has ever been to philmont? like i said before its good to be back :)

I went in 2001. They were having a drought back then though (not sure if they still are), we even had to stay in one site an extra night and hike twice as much the next day because of fires. At the time I had a 60 lb pack and I was 125 lbs. :P
Also, going from a 1k' 70F area to a 9-12k' 100F area gets to you a bit :P

I'm almost an Eagle Scout. All I need is to get my Eagle Project done and a few more merit badges. Next month I'm going on a fifty-mile hike through the mountains and we have to finish within a week.

I've been in scouts for 7 years, been to some battleships in N.Y, backpacking in the Alagheni Mts., and snow camping without a tent. It's a good experience and I love it.
PSp is about 70% done, just have to do the controller and case.

I quit scouts after a month, then joined martial arts. Does that count for anything?

Haha, I quit scouts awhlie back when my friends quit, they were the only reason I went in the frist place, just to hang out with them. When they stopped going, and we started doing a lot more work all the time, I decided I didn't wnat to do it anymore. I think I was like a First Class Scout or something like that, I was almost the Life Scout maybe, all I needed to do was a 5 minute speech for some merit badge and I would have got it, but I hate presentations, so i didn't do it.

i went to philmont last year, my last scouting venture. This summer i went with a group of my friends up to the Boundary Waters canoeing though, its more fun when it isnt scout sanctioned, much more freedom.

Were you in mainly the north or south country? (and did you do baldy?)

If i remember correctly we stayed at Lovers Leap, Crater Lake, Black Mountain, Bobien (i botched the spelling of that, but we went to Trail Peak on a day trip from bobien, it was a layover), then we went to Cimmaroncito and Tooth Ridge camp up through Schafers Pass.

Tooth Ridge was most definitely my favorite campsite because of all of the rocks to climb on. Seriously there were 30 foot tall boulders

gannon, there was suppossed to be this whole drought thing, but it rained everyday almost, at least once it made it nice and cool though so i didnt care

and yeah xiro we did baldy. it was a pretty tiresome hike when you got near the peak but the view was great. kinda dissapointed that only one kid in our crew saw a bear though :(

it was probably the most beautiful scenery i will ever see though especially with all of the mountains and all of the visible stars at night

i went to philmont last year. i hiked around 50-80 miles (i kinda forgot) and some people weren't fit enough to carry the 50lbs they had so i had to carry at least 60 pounds of stuff but it wasn't too bad (except climbing up huge 45 degree slope up the second highest mountain :P ). too bad i didn't get to see any bears, although i did get a nice scar that looks like a mountian lion attack  . i was also at a best western in albequerque a few days ago :P

So no bears for either of you?

we saw 2 on our trip, one was on the first night, and one the fifth or sixth. Our adults were pretty laid back though, and we actually left some food out and open (pilot biscuits) and we had also spilled gatorade powder in my tent.

 the only wildlife most of our crew saw was a couple of turkeys and some bald eagles. me and another guy saw a grey fox pretty close up right before we went to bed. one kid saw a bear though, we were at ponil playing some horse shoes 8) and some kid ran up and says he saw a bear, so my friend ran off and didnt tell any of us, the rest of us were kinda pissed
