Sega Neptune prototype

Post by Gump-in-space »

What do you think of this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Neptune

I was wondering if it was possible to somehow wire a 32X into the genesis, and combine the two power sources through a converter so it can directly plug into the wall without any other adapters. Crazy idea, but if it works, you could frankencase a fakey Neptune shell and sell it for a few hundred bucks :D

I was thinking the exact same thing...

I can't seem to find any 32x cart pinouts though, and since I was thinking about a double cart slot anyways it would take the same amount of effort to just unplug your 32x adapter and put in the genny game.

After researching I found the 32X uses a duel cart slot, so it could be permanent. What about a duel ac adapter on the back of the consule like an N64 with a switch and throw in some batteries?

So let's say you're in genesis mode- power goes to the genesis and recharges the genesis battery- the 32X uses it's battery to run the cart slot

Or 32X mode- power runs the 32X and recharges its battery while a battery runs the genesis.

isn't the cart slot the exact same as genesis, for u can play gen games on the 32X. If it weren't the same that wouldn't be possible. and for the power deally, don't u just combine the cords er whatever and attatch it to a power supply( 7.2V about and the total current of the gen and 32X)?

well that's just my theory :D .

and if you really wanna make it fancy (a.k.a not thick) just solder all( :x ) the cart pins together (the way it should be standing upwards) the put the 32X on the side; put all that in a new case and tadda!

it should work... I was thinking the exact same thing during school a month ago :P except... it used a CDX for more emense portability

Well, in any case, this isn't a portable so It needs to be nearly identical to the shells that are floating around, and it can't be too hard, the controller is the genesis six button built into a second generation saturn controller :)
So this is all that's needed:

Sega Genesis II
32X
2x genesis six botton controllers
2x second generation saturn controllers
working power adapter (maybe one will work for both)

I'd say around $40 to build?

If that were true wouldn't you just be able to put a genesis game into the 32x adapter and it would play?

it is exactly the same, you put the genny carts into the 32x slot too, but a 32x can't work alone, because it is only a powerful addition to the existing genisis hardware. the Genny 3 is not compat with the 32x because it lacks some of the hardware to make the 32x functional.

Put bluntly. The 32x has many of it's pins the same as the Genesis' cart pinout. simply because the 32x needs the video pass through pins to have video out and so you can play Gensis games without removing the 32x.

Don't know how you'd go about combining the two, don't know if it would really be worth it. I can say this, wouldn't the CDX be a better option for this? The System is a Genesis, Sega CD, and 32x rolled into one battery powered CD player. Segasonicfan made one, I think what he did would be the best way to go.

Right and I'm sure there is someone here that also thinks that painting a Dreamcast Black will alow them to pass it off as the Sports edition. Comeon, with this there are two choices, the simple one (use the CDX) and the hard one (fusing Genesis and 32x together). Seriously go with the simple choice.

If you read the website you notice they would pay $400 dolars for one.
Think about it, how much really would you get for a portable cdx, its a system on it's own that litteraly anyone could buy. You build a neptune, and there is only one working one in the world.

No offence, but the fact you think that anyone can get a CDX shows you don't have that much ensite into this. The CDX averages $150 or more on ebay, and is rather rare to be quite frank.

The CDX is just the Genesis and Sega CD in one and doesn't include the 32x. (Apparently you can use the 32x adapter on it though; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't I suppose).

The only reason I was thinking about making a Neptune was because I'm lazy and didn't want to unplug the 32x when I wanted to play Genny games. If you can play them thru the 32x then I guess the point is moot.

You don't have to take off the 32X unless you're using a Power Base Convertor to play Sega Master System games, due to a fittment issue and a possible hardware issue, but you probably don't have a Power Base Convertor so it's not really relevant. The long and the short of it is that the 32X does not have to be removed to play Genesis games. X-Band modem network carts work with 32X and are compatable with a few 32X games, though the chances of you having and using X-Band are slim to none. I believe the Sega Channel cable cart is compatable with 32X, but since the Sega Channel isn't available anymore, that isn't really relevant either. But that info is good for a wiki if anybody is updating one.

Hang on, I just had my idea for this...but it'll be a PERMANENT fixture...hardwire the cartridge into the pins while desolder the Genesis slot. I'll elaborate later.
