Ben uses one of two screens always, a handheld tv or a PSOne screen. He has instructions for making a handmade case or he has diagrams or something that you can use. If you want an idea of how Ben probibly wrote the book read his guide for the PS2p.

Well, it depends on what size portable he's making. I think he's used mainly the screens you find for the PSone and such lately. They're 5" screens and, with some modifications, require very little power.

Sparkfist: My bad. I suppose that would sorta go against what it says the theme is on the cover of the book, anyway. Still, using a Super Joy or other teeny tiny Famicom is the way to go

I'm looking for a way to get a bunch of them here and send them back to the USA, though I'm kinda convinced that it wouldn't be too worthwhile perhaps on the price end.

If you can get people back here to preorder them like Gannon did I dont see a problem. Besides most places selling the famiclones in my area are charging $30-35, even if you could get them for $25 that would be fine.

As for the size of the portable making the screen judgement thats not completely true. The trend it seems Ben had on the Project 42 portables was that the handbuilt ones all had PSOne screens, save for the atari as PSOne screens dont always work. I'd also say that with the PS2p Ben used a PSOne screen as a 5" is far better then a 3" for graphics like that (and text).

Oh, I don't think $25 would be a problem. I'm thinking they'll end up being about $15-$20 depending on how many people get them. However, that's system innards only (no controllers, AC adapter, etc) so you'll need an NES controller to wire to it or something. Sadly, the things I'd be getting don't come with any of that stuff. And to save on shipping (and figuring that people would be using these for making portables anyway) I'd probably cut off the controller port board (since on these things the system is made up of 3 boards and the controller port board just is a waste of space since it's just traces going from the wires to DB-9 ports). Anyway, I think these would be perfect for portablizing, since they already need a case (even when I buy them they'll be caseless: see this page for some info in Japanese). Keep in mind that these things are TINY! I'm not sure really how small the Super Joy is but these can't be much bigger. Plus they supposedly have RF output if you're into that sort of thing. Regardless, the whole thing can't be much bigger than 3"x3" without the controller board. I'd probably throw in the reset and power buttons just because they don't look to be too harmful to the shipping and space costs

We need to get these things bulk though for this to work- the website charges $10 shipping for any order, and shipping from Japan to the USA is about $2 for the first 100g and $1 for every 100 after. So that means 2lb. is roughly $10 to the USA. I'd say probably 10 of these would fit into 2lbs. pretty easy. If we can get some cooperation, I can probably get 10 of these to America for $120-$130 or so. The trouble is getting them through customs on the other side... in June that shouldn't be too much trouble though (since I could just put them in my suitcase and no one would probably even notice)

On another note, the same website is selling the pirate Genesis I bought last week (with region switches and all) for $30. These do come with controllers, but shipping to the USA would be a lot if I sent the entire unit...

Actually, upon second look, it may not be RF in that slot of this model. It might be a "stereo" sound output. I guess we won't be sure about that until we get them... but anyway, yeah, I take back my RF remark until we know for sure
