DONT SOLDER PLASTIC

Post by Sweebez »

I was opening my old laptop to add some ram today and there was a stripped screw. "No problem" i said, "ill just use the soldering iron to melt the plastic around it."

Good Idea on paper.

Bad Idea in real life.

See, I forgot to protect my eyes, so when dell plastic met the iron, it started to melt a bit before a HUGE puff of white smoke came out of it, going straight into my eye. DANG that hurt! I couldnt see straight (literally) for like an hour or two.

So just a word of warning, protect your eyes ALWAYS!

That sucks man. Live and learn!

@Triton: If you have a well ventilated room, it's not bad.

Ya, tell me about it, I once got super glue fumes in my eyes when I sealed a bike pump. I started pumping before it dried and the whole garage was lethal.

@vskid: watch out when you've got contacts. There was a guy near us who was messing with a soldering iron, and the contact like fused onto his eye. He had to go to the ER and he wound up almost losing his sight.

Thats why I might get contacts. That would really suck to have it fuse to your eye, maybe I won't get contacts.
