new to forum, very new to hacking

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

new to forum, very new to hacking

Post by nas-15 »

I'm new to hacking and this is actually my first post. I've read the book and researched basic electronics so i have some understanding but was wondering how you would go about designing something like a dual console portable.
My plans were combining a snes and an n64 and i'm having trouble figuring out how to wire both consoles to one screen.
if anyone could help me out that would nice.

:x Search! This is way too hard for someone as new as you. Just try a snes portable without the n64. N64 is already way hard on your own.

Dude. Jeroen, calm the hell down - this is a completely valid question that I've never seen answered.

That up top is a PSOne screen, and at bottom is a 3PDT switch.

The one I was picturing was Digi-key part number 360-1053-ND.

Basically what you do after what is pictured is put composite video, audio left and audio right from the SNES and put it on one set of those three pins on the bottom of the switch and put composite video, audio left and audio right from the N64 on the other set of the three pins. Understand?

See Jeroen? If you don't know how to answer the question, don't scream at him.

Cool diagram, Sky! I may use that in the near future *darts eyes*.....Anyways, I think our new member is looking for complete and total pinouts for hooking up the systems; Jeroen is referring to the diagram in the N64 forum that shows how to wire multiple systems. I'll dig it up.

You don't need to switch a/v signals, just wire a/v from each console to the screen, then use a spdt switch to power either console. The hardest part about a n64/snes combo will be the controllers.

Indeed it is! Here's a complete layout:

Although it would probably be more expensive to make 2 separate handhelds depending on the screen/case you use, it'd probably be easier and better in the long run. I also suggest starting with the SNES; it was my first portable, and it's a fun project to start off with; I've made 2 already (my original and an updated version) and I'm just now moving on to the N64. But hey, do what you wanna do!

Good luck,

Ah sorry. I'm just not used to seeing any girls around here.

And gannon, the only reason I said that is because maybe she wanted two on at a time... for some reason...? :P

So scratch that diagram. Just wire the video and audio to the screen from both the N64 and SNES and get a switch (ON-ON, SPDT) to toggle the power to the N64 or the SNES. Or buy a ON-OFF-ON switch, and have it go:

N64 Power - OFF - SNES Power.

Maybe I'll draw up a diagram soon, but do you catch the general idea?

EDIT: Check CronoTriggerFan's post!

i actually printed out the layout of the n64 and snes i just wanted a better understanding of how you could use one switch to power either the n64 or the snes and have the screen turn on at the same time. thats what i've been stuck on, trying to figure out how to use one switch to select the console and not have both of them running at the same time but still having the screen turn on regardless of what system was selected. Anyone get what i mean or do i sound sensless right now?
