xbox power

I recently got a free xbox its broken and Ive never had an xbox before and im not sure if the power converter is external or internal? becuase i dont have the cords for it so I was just gonna use my ps2 cord if it will work so will it?

The original Xbox has an internal power supply. It's power cord is simply a two-pronged plug with a fairly standard connector on the other end (you can see the shape by looking at the back of your Xbox). While I'm not familiar with the PS2's power cord, if it fits that description than you can use it.
You also might want to check into a program Microsoft was running issuing new power cords with GFCI breakers in them, after there was a case of an Xbox catching on fire. I believe the cords are free if your Xbox was made in between certain dates, but you'll have to wait a while for it to be delivered.

Simple answer yes. I change the cable from the PS2 (slim) PSU to the Xbox whenever I want to play the other.

ok I got another Question the xbox is missing the fan thats on top of that metal thing not the one at the back and its also missing 3 capictors and the one metal coil is ripped of from the power converter but is still there and the whole xbox wont do anything when its plugged in and I push power so is there anyway to fix this? bypass some of the stuff thats missing? or should I not bother trying to fix it Ill try to out some pics up later if its needed

p.s can I you use a computer power box for the xbox if the one in now doesnt work? I think I saw somone do that b4

As long as there is no damage to the motherboard you sound fine. The other question you have, as long as the PSU has an ATX connector you can use it to power the Xbox. From the sounds of it it might be better for you to just transplant the Xbox to a computer.

Hope the guy that gave you that didn't mess with the motherboard.

Check xbox-scene's Buy/Sell/Trade forums. There are usually people who will sell you PSU's there. Make sure you tell them your version number though.

here are some pics of the mobo and psu? At this point im pretty sure the problem has somthing to do with the power if you look at the psu you which im guessing you guys mean by powere converter the one coil is broken off i tryed resoldering it but i most likly got it wrong you can also see in the one picture there a 3 capcitors missing im not sure if its just the version of xbox or they've been removed if this helps it was made in 2003

Ever notice they pretty much made the xbox like a computer in a small case? Since the case is so smashed up if i get it to work im gonna put it in an old computer case it;ll look pretty kool =p

the missing capacitors were probably never there, im pretty sure that they dont put them there as a cost cutting measure (they look pretty redundant)

if the power supply was messed up, you could replace it with a PC power supply, like people have said. i wouldnt go soldering around there then plugging it in, it sounds likea good way to fry something.

its also possible that the xbox as a whole is just fried (you said the case was damaged, it sounds like its had some trauma)

Well, actually, I'd check VERY CAREFULLY, and see if any voltage is going in through the PSU...just don't touch the input pins or the PSU itself, I did with my *Original gray*PS, and got bad burns.

Well as long as you leave the Xbox unplugged then take it apart it should be fine. By the time you get to where you can take the PSU out most of the voltage should have been discharged. The only other thing you can do to be sure you don't hurt your self (again) is just hold the edges, the Xbox's PSU is rather big.

@ VB_Master, I would think everyone knows about Llamma, the things is with the Xbox, if the PSU goes you might aswell improve upon the design by putting a real (computer) PSU for it. Why keep the damn thing crippled?

Ok I hooked up the comp psu to the mobo its all wired up correctly I try to turn it on nothing happens what could be wrong?

Double check everything, especially the power/eject button. Other then that I wouldn't know what's wrong. You might have to make a quick stop in at Xbox-scene and read the xbox case mod guide.
