Computer Errors

I have been having errors on my Computer lately, apprearing randomly. Saying i should download the program on the error box.

one of many

can does anyone know of a totally free registry repair program that gets rid of these?

Please help, this is getting annoying.

Looks like spyware or a trojan to me.

Update and run Ad-Aware, Spybot, and your antivirus utility.

Chances are your registry is fine, the program is just using the Windows messenger service to pester you and make you think it's a real Windows error.

Whatever you do don't go to the websites in the error boxes!

In the meantime, follow the instructions <a href="http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/doc ... /">here</a> to stop the Windows service that creates these alerts. (Don't worry all it does is it stops allowing messages from remote parties from popping up. It shouldn't interfere with any programs. In fact it's unnecessary to have it running. Think of it as the client side of the NET SEND command.)

As for registry scanners, click Start -> Run and enter "scanreg". I'm pretty sure this still works with XP.

Someone is sending those messages to you. That means they can get into your network. After they get into your network it's very easy to send those messages. If you have anybody else on your network, try this at a command prompt

You should see the message on other computers networked. To stop it, I reccomend a firewall.

@Bic: I tried that 'scanreg' just out of curiosity at the run command and it didn't find the file. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 (OEM).

To stop it, you don't need a firewall. you need to shut down the service. Software firewalls don't stop real hackers anyway, they just issue false alarms making people claim they have been hacked, when they haven't.

Start-> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

For the Services:Alerter and Messenger
right click and choose 'Properties', and set the 'Startup Type' to 'Disabled'. then click 'Ok'

Ok, that works too. Although a firewall could keep *some* people out.

We got some o those once. Just get all the Adware Spyware Etc. blockers you can.
