"Solder weld"

what is "solder weld?" I dunno. I bought it at Radioshack. <_< I thought it would just be applied and dry and be a conductor and stuff. But I looked at it. It said "Works at the temperature of a match or lighter." I said "hmm." I put it on the pin of a 72 pin nes connector. Then I "Activated" the liquid with a soldering iron and soldered a wire. it would not solder to the lower portions of the solder tail before. (i ripped off the upper portions. But I give it this stuff, and it won't come off now. <_< What is this stuff? Flux? It doesn't say flux.

Solder Paste, I think. You apply it dry to a pin and a contact then light a match (or light the lighter) and hold it close to the solder paste. It's basically soldering but with a fire source.

Wouldn't that work extremely well for soldering surface mount components? (since you can apply it to the pins and simply place it on the board in the correct place)

That's what it's mainly used for, actually.

I tried that stuff, and it sucked, all the past was seperated, I guess I got a tube that had been arond for quite some time???

I definitely suggest staying away from the solder weld stuff. The solder beads are way too big, and the overall mixture is hard to use and just plain bad. One of the best pastes I've used is Kester's, but unfortunetly the smallest tubes are $40+ and most places will only ship it 2-day or overnight, which tacks on atleast another $20. I just ordered a small tube of paste (among other things) made by ChipQuik from circuitspecialists.com and I'm hoping it'll be a nice, cheap alternative.

I got it at a closing radio shack. along with a whole bunch of crap. <_<
