Console hackers starter kit! What do I need?

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

Console hackers starter kit! What do I need?

Post by madhat »

I have decided to start making my first portable, but as things stand I don't have a lot of tools. Assuming I stick with territory that has been tread in the past (meaning I don't need to reverse engineer anything cuz I can just ask people here how crap works) what do I need?

Note that I am getting a pre-built case (namely a game boy) so I don't need fancy vacuum form stuff or CNC laser cutter whatevers...

I have a sautering iron (I'm sure I messed up that spelling...) and some normal screw drivers. I have a Nintendo screwdriver that I know opens up the home consoles, but I don't think it opens game boys.

What else do I need? What do I need to cut circuit boards? Where can I get wires, etc?

Well to make a portable with the info you provided, you would need:

a system to make portable that would fit in a Gameboy (i.e. a noac)
a screen that would fit (i.e. a hipgear)
some 22-26 AWG wire(radioshack)
some solder (small stuff)
hot glue and a glue gun to protect your connections

To cut circuit boards, I would use a dremel, however I am monetarily limited to a hacksaw.

also add a decent overhead light , preferably a magnefying lens with lights on it (trust me)

and something to hold your project steady

don't forget a good electronics book, for schematics and tips and such

I recommend "Hacking Video Game Consoles" by Benjamin Heckendorn.
