hacking...illegal?

Post by ganonbanned »

i just got the supplies to start my genesisp, which i really wanted to do for a long time. my mom saw every thing i had out, and asked what i was doing. i said hacking my sonic gold game, and explained what portabalizing was. now, everything except the sonic gold game is in her closet, because supposably altering consoles and hacking is illegal. she looked at all my stuff on my computer, deleted all my ROMs, documents pertaining to hacking, and how to burn sega CD games. is hacking really illegal?

EDIT: obviously, burning sega CD games and ROMs is illegal, but i mean console hacking.

Building protables is not. If changing how the console looks was illegal, then you would not be able to paint your house because you change how the walls look. Shows like "Overhaulin", "Trucks!" and "Monster Garage" would be illegal. Everythign would alway slook exactly as they did coming out of the factory. You have the right to do what you want with your own property. The feds don't care if you light it on fire, throw it down the stairs, pimp it out, run it over with the car or use it as a clay skeet shoot target; it's your property and you can do what you want.

Now, burning games, ROMS, and stuff like that IS illegal. You are copying a company's intellectual property without their consent, which is a federal offense.

Your mom, like many many other people, hear the word "hacking" and immediately assume Black Hat hacking, phising, and getting old people's social security numbers so you can buy more hacking stuff.

It may help to relate console hacking to car customization or maybe something artsy.

EDIT: read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_hacking

Basically, what we do here is fine. Piracy is a no-no.

lol Typical uneducated adult.

Oh and ganon, just go to your recycle bin, all your deleted files should be in there...unless your mom was somehow smart enough to know to delete them form there also.

The one thing you may want to worry about is using their name or logo if you sell it, like a logo stamped on the portable itself.

Oh, snap! You're mom totally PWNED your files! I'm sorry, that's not funny. But no, it's... so NOT illegal. You should show her this site (maybe not the forums... but show her Ben's portables. Then maybe make her watch Port Washington so she can see that Ben's just a geek like the rest of us and we have no real desire to "get into trouble" like the jocks at school. :P ).

Be down to earth with her. Say stuff like, "Mom... come on now. It's me. Do you really think I would be doing something like this if I knew it was illegal? Trust me, I've done a lot of research on the matter and I know my stuff. See, look at this guy." *Show her Ben's portables* "He made portables out of all of these systems and has even been on TV before showing them off!" Then maybe try to find Ben's segment on AotS's website. Also take some facts from this thread that has already been said. For example,

There's enough proof on this site and (probably most convincing) G4's site that "hacking" videogame consoles is NOT illegal. Maybe even have her read my post. :P

Hi ganonbanned's mom! I'm 16, and I'm like a saint when it comes to... well, a lot of things, really. (I'm not too modest about it, though... but I'm not spoiled, either. The only reason I haven't built a portable yet is because I don't have the money...) I've never done anything illegal and I have never really even "talked back" to my parents. My mom homeschool's me, and I plan to go to college when I'm 18 and see it through to my Master's Degree. See? Don't I seem like a trustworthy person? Please trust me when I say - again - this is NOT illegal in any way.

How could taking apart consumer electronics be illegal? Warranty-voiding goodness, yes, but most of the systems we portabilize here aren't supported any more anyway. It would be the same as getting upset about taking apart a toaster or a VCR.

However, she's right about the ROMs. Shame on you! :P
