Phantasy Star: What's the big deal?

Post by CronoTriggerfan »

From what I hear, this is pretty much the only good RPG series on the Genesis. However, after reading about it, watching videos, and viewing screenshots, I really wasn't impressed. I'm looking at 2 and 4 in particular. How's the story? Is it really worth playing? And is the series good as a whole? What one should I play to give me the best impression of what the series is REALLY made of?

Well you can't judge a game but some simple things like that. Also the thing about Phantasy Star is that it's like Final Fantasy for Sega's consoles.

I personally haven't played the early RPGs, I only got into the Online series. Which if you try out it's a very simple game graphicly, however the core of the game is online play, get that and the game is a 100 times better.

The way I see it, Phantasy Star 1 and 2 are very 8bit-esque titles, even though 2 was for the Genesis. Phantasy Star 3 is just plain weird. Phantasy Star 4 seemed to be the first 'modern' rpg in the series, despite being the last in the series as well. My opinions of 4 are rather high, though, because it has a great sci-fi story line and an interesting musical score.

I had the Phantasy Star Collection for the GBA, which included 1, 2, and 3. I only played the first one though. I must say, I really did enjoy it for a while there. But then I got bored. And later sold my GBA. Anyways, it's worth playing. For a while at least.

I've only played the first episode of online for the gamecube. pretty fun even without online mode if you have a group of friends play. I think PSO would rock on the DS, the touch screen would be great for the on screen keyboard and the map.

Phantasy Star 2 is one of my favorite RPG's from years ago. I always liked the mix of sci-fi and swords. 3 is definitely weird, bought it and haven''t played it much. They're kind of like a "Final Fantasy light" for Sega.

I didn't even know there was a GBA compilation. I may have to go check ebay for that...

I hear they're either done with or near the end of the fifth PSO game. I believe it's called Phantasy Star Universe.

As for the other games, I own Episode 1 for the Dreamcast. Oh god that ruled when it was in it's prime. I have both Episodes 1 and 2 for the Xbox. Only problem there is that you pay about $13 a month to play online (5 for Xbox Online and 8 for the Sega Hunter's license).

I have to say making Phantasy Star into a card game was really dumb, that's like that one Metal Gear game that is a card based game. The only other thing that kept me from gettting it was that I don't own a GameCube.

Blue Burst I believe is PC so I might get that, esspeally if online play is free. So who knows if any of you are online you might see me.
