The only things it will do are make games run smoother and take less time to load. It's not worth doing it on an NES or Genesis in my opinion. You won't see much results on those systems though, because most games don't really take a heavy toll on the processor. On a Gamecube or PS2, thats a different story.

Actually, I personally think it'd be worth it on the Genesis just so Sonic 2 wouldn't slow down when you get hit and a million rings go flying.

Ya, I agree with you, there are some games that lag a bit in some parts. Thats why I said:

I would only overclock if I wanted to go all out so I could brag about it.

I overclocked my GBC, and it is really nice for slower games like pokemon. I feel so slow when I use my brother's SP.

They had Epicenter on TheScreenSavers and he showed off overclocking the Genesis. The advantage you get is no lag in video. He used Sonic 2 as the example, where when you run super fast through the level you get a choppy look, another example he used was the two player fuction and how the video gets really lagged and choppy with having to deal with two screens over one.

So you up the clock speed the CPU can handle the graphics a lot better. That the who premiss of overclocking, just better performace.

You get the same result if you overclock the SNES, NES, PlayStation, and Dreamcast. Hell I've read that overclocking the Playstation actually impoves loading time.

Load time really doesn't increase much on the PSX, because tht's the CD sensor's job.

Overclocking things is just a ton of fun. I love to overclock the Genesis, because it gets rid of a ton of lag in Sonic and Phantasy Star.

It would even be worthit on the NES. It always tends to slow down when you are fighting the bosses on Metroid.

I read an old BMUG Newsletter book yesterday, and they had instructions on how to upgrade your Mac IIsi for $5. (BMUG is/was a Mac User Group, and this issue was from 1993.) Basically you desoldered the 40 mhz clock oscillator from the motherboard and replaced it with a socket and a 50 mhz oscillator. This brought the IIsi from 20 mhz to 25 mhz, a pretty big deal back then (for you kids who may not have been alive at that point, that's like going from 2.0 to 2.5 ghz today.)

I want to overclock my spare GBC, but I can't find the right oscillator. There's some fun things you can do with a 100mhz oscillator, but its legality is questionable so I won't go into any mroe detail.

Couldn't you modify a fm transmitter/modulator to be an adjustable oscillator?

A nes is definently worth overclocking. Zelda tends to slow down a lot on the last levels, so I've noticed. Also I've noticed that Link's Awakening tends to slow down whereas Link's Awakening DX does not. Is that because of the gameboy or the cartridge?

Nah. The Genesis 3 uses a combo chip, which overclocking will speed up. This results in screwed up video, fast sound/video, and actual overclocking of the CPU portion of the chip.

You know how in emulators you can usually speed up gameplay? That's what OCing the v3 would do, except distorting many sprites and sounds. Right now I'm trying to find a vurnerable speed the v3 can run at sped up without screwing up.

It gets rid of all the lag. The mod is pretty easy, but there is no Genesis 2 overclocking webpage.

Well, there is. But it's supposed to be in a magazine soon enough... If you want, I can sell you an overclocked system, or I can step by step you through it.
