another krazy idea from krepticor's twisted mind

Post by Krepticor »

ok here is a question that has been bugging me for a while

I remember the time I spent hours and hours on a classic NES game such as MEtroid or the classic castlevanias...my point being that I cannot beat them in an hour or two (without cheating)

I don't have too many saturdays I can throw at a classic NES game (though I would really love to, no really)

Anyway I know there are a few emulators out there that can save one's game by capturing the ROM's image...no idea what that means...anyway I was wondering if this could be done with a real NES game using real NES hardware, i know nobody has the bazillions of dollars to design a very intricate BIOS with a dynamite interface but mabye a simple unit that plugged into the base of the cart that had two buttons, capture and load

This would be a single game version but could be adapted for more games (with more buttons, yay)

The synopsis is I was wondering if this could be done...or if it has been done...or if I need to seek out the padded rooms

So, what you ar saying is you want to be able to load save states from your emulator into a real NES? Or are you saying that you want a PC emulator to run real NES carts? There are ways of doing both of those things, but the save states is harder by far. I suggest you start looking at the NESDEV website or forums. Sorry, don't have a link, but you could google it. I know for a fact that both of these projects have been worked on before, and I am positive that the latter one has been finished to the point where common NES games can be run. As for save states I am not sure whether that project ever got finished. Apparently doing save states on the NES is much harder than doing it on the PC through an emulator. (what do ya know... )
Emulation isn't accurate. There is no substitute for real hardware!

If you're willing to leave your NES in the ON state all the time, you can enable the PAUSE function on the expansion port. I believe there is info on NESDEV about it.

Ok, if you REALLY, REALLY wanna play (and save) NES games on the go, I recomend a Sony PSP. Or a DS. Better a PSP though, easier (and better) to hack. Personally I thnink the PSP is only worth anything AFTER it's been hacked anyway. (unlike my Ds...)

However, if your into the portablizing scene (you are at this forum arn't you?) I'm betting your ideal solution involves a lot of soldiering and case molding and eventually costing you a brazilian dollars. I can recomend a cart that loads roms into a device that allows you to play them on a real nes, but it doesnt involve any of that "save game" stuff.

P.s. "a brazilian" means either a lot of money, or just an inhabitant pf the large south american country. your choice really.

I really want to lock this because it's about ROMs. If you want to talk about ROMs, go somewhere else.

Well, it's not REALLY about ROMs, it's about hardware. Ok, ok, from now on we'll only talk about Open source and homebrew, ok?

I just read his post again and it said he wants to make ROM images. It's ok.
