lets not get into another argument about which next-gen system is better...

but some things to add:

- someone mentioned "256 bit consoles" which would be *technically* incorrect. i believe all the next-gen consoles are 128 bit. anyways, the whole issue of "how many bits" sort of became pointless after we hit 64.

- the xbox 360 does have good games; its a good system and the most powerful of the three. bashing it for no reason makes you look like a sony/nintendo fanboy.

I'm sure you all know that the key reason Nintendo is able to keep prices down on their present and next gen console is because they one they used a presently exsisting CPU that was cheap, and the graphics chip they use is a custom from ATI. Also did you know that the Xbox360 is doing the same thing?

As for Sony, they are a semi-conductor manufacture and as such they made all the chips for the PSone and PS2. The problem I see with what they are still doing is that custom IC making for something as mass produced as gaming consoles isn't always cheapest and most efficent. The fact they went with Cell and we now see that the Cell processor has some big design flaws proves that.

If Sony doesn't fall flat on their face they'll likely revise how they make their future consoles. However if they don't get the PS3 out by Christmas, and working, I don't think they'll make even second place in the market.

This generation is so fun!
Sony and Microsoft dominated the market while Nintendo stumbled behind with people ridiculing them for making various mistakes.
Now Sony and Microsoft got cocky and jump into the lake while Nintendo (despite having scared some people lately) looks like it's going ot get the kickass revenge it deserves. What a power shift!

What do you have to say, John?

alright now look into tis a little deeper and see the possibilities

THIS MEANS THAT SONY WILL TAKE A HIT, REALIZE THEY NEED TO FIX IT, AND COMEOUT WITH A UNIT FOR THE GAMER!!!

I am disappointed yes, but I wish that the powerhouse for Good japanese hih def games will deliver (Yes I know wii will hurt SONY)

But I believe if we wait we will win (notie I said we as in a community, not wii as in nintendo)

I still think sony are taking a big gamble with all the untested new technology, but id really liek to see it work for them

somehow i only really see sony as the one making a full generation jump, the 360 is more like an xbox 1.5 and the wii is even futher behind that

now both companies have their reasons for doing that, but i would liek to see sony succeed

the xbox 360 might look and feel like an old xbox, but i assure you its definitely at least a generation ahead.

wow... is the PS3 going to be that big  ?

once they make the revision (if they do) it'll be much better, but still probably somewhat large.

wii actually doesn't seem to far behind :D. all that's "dragging" them is the bajillions of retro games that are downloadable, which is sorta ironically pushing them ahead of the group . the graphics were only at gamecube potential in E3, where in real life it will be about at xbox360's potential (or so they say). so though nintendo is saying that wii is'nt next gen, I'd say it basically is. But either way, I hope (though doubt) PS3 will fail and be in 3rd... because I never really like sony. Sony will most likley take 2nd or maybe (scarce chance) even take 1st like usual :( . fortunatley it looks like wii may just succeed like the good ol' times when I wanted sega to succeed

the the report from the Inquirer was false. the developers are the ones who would know what they are talking about. Rolling Eyes
the lower memory acces is not even a feature that is used in game, only for debuging. the Emotion Engine in the ps2 did not even have the ability to access said memory, and it did just fine.
The contentious triangle setup figure, which The Inquirer claims to be 270 million triangles per second, compared to around 500 million per second in the Xbox, came under fire first.

"It's just a pointless measurement," one programmer told us. "Where's the context? How were these numbers measured? There are loads of different ways you can measure tri performance, and just putting up headline figures like that tells you nothing."

"In fact, the PlayStation 2 had better tri performance than the Xbox, on paper," he continued. "Everyone knows that the Xbox was more powerful at running real games, but if you just wanted to fill a screen with 2D, flat colour, unlit triangles, then the PS2 was much better at that, so it looked great in benchmarks. That just shows how meaningless this measurement is - it's really pointless."
I rest my case

you know that really doesnt tell us anything, so its slow at rendering 2d triangles,it could still suck at everything else with that huge memory bottleneck.

there is no memory bottleneck. the 16mb read speed is a feature that developers say that they never even use when programming, they only use it in the most obscure situations. the 16mb/s read spead is for the cpu to read graphics ram. not for the cpu to read the cpu's ram.
Each developer concurred that the slide in question was referring to local memory on the RSX - the graphics memory, in other words, and not the local memory on the Cell processor which The Inquirer claimed was in question.

"I didn't see that slide at Devstation, but all the numbers add up," one coder said, "and it's a total non-issue. You never, ever need to access that memory from the Cell - I can think of some useful debugging things you might do with that access in the testing stage, but that's about it. In fact, on the PS2 you couldn't access that memory from the CPU at all, and it was never really a problem!"
EDIT:
Skyone wrote:As much as I want to say this is true, I would've read it on Engadget by now. I can't trust the Inquirer.

Engadget

*blushes*
how is that even related.

Thank you for that completely useless and unintelligent post ....
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!
