Windows Emulator

Im on the lookout for a windows emulator, i remember seeing one about somewhere but i cant for the life of me think where

This isnt for a linux or a Mac, it has to be a PC version

Basically im running Windows XP64 and because its 64-bit it wont run lots of my lovely old games like doom, duke nukem 3D, Starcraft etc

So i was looking for something that can emulate a Win95/98 enviroment so those games will run

Well, you could use DOSBox for any dos-based games you may have, but that's pretty much all I can think of.

yeah, but I thought that if you were in the old schoolin' mood, you may be interested in that. I guess that the only option I know of in that case would be to have a second partition with Windows 98, but that can be pretty complicated, and you'd probably need to wipe all of your data

ive been using Dosbox for a while now, only way to get X-wing running

Xp64 more trouble than its worth really, but its a whole lot cheaper than a regular copy (ie free

)

I run something called Virtual PC 2004. It is a Windows based program meant for Windows 2000 or Windows XP that allows you to install MS-DOS, Windows 3.1x, Windows 9X, Windows NT, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP to "virtual machines". Each virtual machine is only two files large, no matter what you put in them, but the Virtual Hard Disk file can grow to as large as it needs, often in the gigabytes. It sounds exactly like what you are looking for. However, it needs a good deal of RAM and processor power, as it is not an emulator: You actually INSTALL the OS and need lisenses, it just runs the guest OS it as an application within your host OS.

Since I got VPC2004, Windows released Virtual Server 2005 for free from the Microsoft website. This is not an evaluation version, this is the full version. I checked at the FAQ. I do not know what possessed Microsoft to release it for free, maybe they counldn't compete with VMWare or something.

Since Microsoft is releasing their OWN software for free, I feel no guilt with giving the link to the free download on their own site. As a mini-mod, I should state that links to illegal/copied wares are a no-no. This is a rare exception, being that the developer is giving it away free from their own site.

In any case, the link below is to Microsoft's website, directly to where you can download it. Feel free to research it first if you want. Hope this helps!

Also, you don't need to partition system at all. Windows Virtual Server 2005 requires Windows XP or Server 2003, 32-bit or 64-bit version.

thanks, thats just what im after, the PC im setting it up on is a 2.1Ghz AMD 64 with 512 RAM so i should be fine i think

Dont worry i got all the licenses, Just not enough XP ones

EDIT* on readin it more i found it quite funny that it lists 550Mhz as the minimum requirement for the 64 bit version, did they even make 64 bit computers back when 500Mhz was fast?

Yes, SPARC processors were 64-bit, IIRC. I think was an Alpha that ran at 500MHz as well. Neither are PC compatable though.

im running into a bit of trouble with Virtual server 2005

It keeps telling me that i need ISS world wide web service installed, is this because the computer is not kooked up to the internet or is there something else?

Try this one instead of the Microsoft one. It's VMware Server. I use it at work to run multiple operating systems and it works great. They are the reason that Microsoft started offereing theirs for free just recently.

hmm, its still kicking up a beef about IIS not being istalled or properly configured

what is it and why dont i have it?

IIS is Internet Information Services, Microsoft's web server offering. If you have XP you have it. You just need to install it. If you go into Control Panel=>Add/Remove Programs and then select the Add/Remove Windows Components button on the left-hand side of the screen. Internet Information Services will be in the list of components that can be installed. Check the box and click next. It will bug you for the OS disk during this so make sure you have that handy. After the install is finished you should be all set. If you're concerned about security, after installing IIS go to Microsoft's download section and search for the IIS Lockdown tool (it's free). Download it and run it on your machine to "lock down" your IIS install. Good luck!

thanks that seems to have sorted it and it's installing properly, it said i might encounter some problems because im on an unsupported host (XP64)
