Is it bad if the LED leads are touching the metal covering of the LCD panel? Will it short the LEDs out?

Yes, it is bad and will short the LEDs. Just use some hot glue or electrical tape to stop them from touching. I forgot about the metal plate in the GBC when I was putting a charger in place of the EXT port and it kept shorting, fixed with a piece of electrical tape.

Look at the circle closely...

Shouldn't the red wire from the battery go to pin 2 of the 7808 and the grey wire from the battery go to pin 1 of the 7808?

also, does it matter where I place the wire coming from pin 2 to the screen?

I think he just accidentally mixed up the + and - on the battery. The grey wire should be ground and the red wire should be positive voltage. As long as the screen has a wire connecting from a ground spot on the screen to pin 2, then you're good. There are several spots on the PSone screen marked ground.

no, i didn't bypass that surface mount component yet, but to me it's bright enough. It only looks dim in the picture because I half covered up the flash so I wouldn't get glare, but it made everything darker than it really was.

oh, and if you mix up positive and negative on the board where the fan is attached to, will it fry the fan? I thinks I might have put the wrong wire to the wrong terminal and now my fan won't work.

Which terminal is positive and negative? (on the fan board where the GC power adaptor plugs into)

i fried it. fried everything. including $200 worth of parts...

i had a feeling I was getting in over my head.

this project is dead unless someone can tell me why it just didn't work. I had everything connected just like in the diagrams, except for adding the gamecube plug into the mix. nothing worked though when I turned it on though.

I am done. I just can't believe I just tossed $200 down the drain...

What the heck did you do between the time you wired it and the time you fried it? Are you SURE it's fried? Try running each thing separately.

WOW. Lack of heatsinks, perhaps? Probably just a jumped fuse somewhere, or you got your traces tied. Man, that sucks. Or you connected the battery up wrong.
