Sega Game Gear Battery: Possible 7.2V power Source.

I purchased a sega game gear in early april, and it came with an AC adapter and... this.

The back says this:

Not only does the plug fit perfectly into the PS1 and its screen, but the plug polarity is the same as well. It needs a 9VDC source to charge though, meaning a normal 7.5V PS1 power supply won't work, a 9VDC GG power supply is needed. Of course, given that the charge current is 0.8A, a bridge rectifier and a 7809, with accompanying circuitry, should work just fine. That or put a different plug on an old Genesis AC cable or something (Genesis AC adaptors are either 9 or 10 VDC)...

I do not yet know if this battery works, or if it is Ni-Cd or Ni-Mh. However, it has a belt loop, and it may be possible to put in new cells (or even a new charging circuit if you want a different cell type and are a fairly hardcore modder). Even if it isn't to be used as your portable's primary power source, it can be an extra battery that you can use and walk around with.

Seems like NiMH, 7.2v vs. the NiCD and Li-Ion 7.4v. Unfortunately, this is only a 1200mAh battery pack. Good for a NOAC, SNES, NES, Atari or Genesis, but not for anything higher.

i have one of these also. mine charges with a genesis 2 power supply and it also powers a genesis2 with no modding

nicd batteries are also 1.2v each. i think its a nicd pack, based on its age and low capacity.

Perhaps it can be opened and the batteries swapped, and depending on the charger type, it might be left in there too.

Modding one of these to use Ni-MH or Lithiums might be interesting, if needed.

not sure it was my brothers from awhile back when he bought it for a gamegear i never really charged it all the way, just kinda fooled around with it and tried to think of something cool to do. i do like your idea to stick some Ni-Mhs in their or li-ions. i think im gonna crack mine open now too

Just make sure the charger will work with Ni-MH or Lithiums, ok? Don't want to fry them or anything. All else fails, you could try and crack open a charger from Radio Shack and some of their 7.2V RC batteries. Those MIGHT fit inside this thing. No promises though.
