we're going to get a 3D printer at work! check it out:

Anything you draw out in a 3D CAD program it can "print" with ABS plastic. Think of the possiblities for case designs! yes, i'm excited

So, does it just print designs onto the plastic or does it actually cut it out like a CNC machine? Sounds cool, but i'm a little confused.

if you look at the FAQ on that site you'll see how they do it. They semi-liquify the plastic and then the "print head" moves around and deposits the plastic in layers to form the part. We got a sample part, it's actually really durable.

i work at a small company that a friend of mine started about 5 years ago, so i pretty much have a shoe-in for using all the cool stuff that they buy. It's called venmill industries if you're curious, for now all we do is make machines to repair CD's, but it's pretty cool

Me too.

Anyways, I saw those printers in Popular Science once. They look pretty fun. Do they still have to use the wax filler, or have they developed the technology past that point? (I read the article a coupl eyears ago I think...)

I may not be as senile as the mods above, but I thought the same as well.
If this thing works in layers, then can it make a hollow sphere? If it can make a hollow sphere I'm gonna hafta crown it Officially the Coolest Thing I've Seen All Year...... that is, until the Wii comes out.
