Help! I want to build a dedicated server.

Post by PancakeGoblin »

What would be a good, sub-$500 config for a server for my websites (dont' ask what they are lol, they wouldn't be well recieved here I don't think, but they aren't inappropriate)?

I use around 300gb/month bandwidth on my current host.

Note that I don't need an OS!

If you land me the best config, you won't have your pancakes stolen anymore! :P

Thanks,
Sir Goblin

There's a really good book you can get about doing it with Linux, forget the name though. It shouldn't be too hard to find though because it was the only one I could find on Google about the topic.
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

So you're trying to run a server off your cable modem or DSL connection?

Check this website out:
http://www.dslwebserver.com/

You need a static IP, and you have to make sure your ISP allows you to do this. (or if you can have them upgrade your package to allow you to run a server.)

You do need an OS. Without one, the system will sit on its bum doing nothing. You can get a copy of Windows Server from eBay, or you could do everything for free with Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP.

You don't need anything fancy unless you have a lot of server-intensive things you need to do. (Serving up HTML pages is simple, running PHP scripts like phpbb requires more power.) You could probably get away with using a $299 home PC.

I could use some help on this as well, I was trying to set up my own webserver, using Ubuntu linux as it was the first linux cd I picked up(I'd like to use Gentoo, but I don't want to go through another 20 hour installation like the firsttime) And I've been trying to install apache, but Ubuntu doesn't have it in their packages, so I downloaded it from the apache site, and tried to follow their directions, but when it says type make to build the source code, it says command make not found, or soemthing like that. Anyone know what is causing that?

My server is a custom-built job with dual Pentium II 233MHz cpus, 256MB ram, an 8.7gb SCSI hard drive (kicks sata's butt) and Windows 2000 Advanced Server. (IIS)

It handles everything I throw at it, and if you keep updated with patches you should be fine.

Of course, if you want to set up Linux and run apache, go ahead. It's your choice.

Thanks all!

It seems that if marshall can run his with that config...I'll be fine, lol. I got something that can cover that.

And bic, what I meant is I already have an OS for it.

you dont need a static IP if you have a router you can configure with a dynamic DNS service (most new routers)
