homemade lighter

Does anyone know if it's possible to make a lighter? The reason i'm asking is being it would be cool to have a custom built lighter.

I was thinking of making a flamethrower from a water gun this summer. Fill the water gun with lighter fluid (or something the doesn't burn up stream), strap a lighter with the long tube things to it with the flame ending up as far away from the gun as possible, and begin burninating. This wouldn't be used as a weapon, just a long range fire starter. This is kind of a lighter.

what i mean is to not use an external source of fire. Pretty much just make a lighter

I don't think it's that hard. Just get one of those cheap lighters that come in packs of six (the transparant ones) and get the 'electric shock thingy' out of it. I don't know what else to call it.

Though I don't really know if you could build something that can house it. You also need a mechanical system to open the place where the fluid comes out. Seems hard after all

i have a lighter made by my great grandad in the trenches.
its a alchohol type made from the casing of a bullet and some bits and bobs he found.

making a lighter is fairly easy, but a little pointless when you can buy them so cheap. i smoke a lot and buy 10 lighters for Â£1.50 so that i never run out.

first you need to either choose gas or petrol for your fuel. petrol makes it easier, as all you need is a cotton wick, a body for the alchohol, and then a flint to ingnite the wick. somehow you will need to incorperate a lid to snuff the flame as well.

gas is more complicated as you need to store the pressurised gas, and then vent it through a valve. making the small valve is probably too tricky without going through lots oif effort.

i dont recommend using an electric peizo. anyone who smoke and uses one of them will be able to tell you they break quickly and dont ignite the gas as well as they get old. flints are much harder wearing and can be easily replaced.

Too bad my parents would probably disown me if I got burned, (due to stupidity) which I probably would

Glad you liked it, I though I might get in trouble for posting something like that.
I might try making one at my grandparent's house, because they live in the middle of nowhere. It would suck if I got burned though, over an hour away from the nearest hospital. I'll have to think up some kind of protection for testing.

I saw that on Unscrewed, except they used a blow torch, and Rubbing alcohol, also they changed the tip couse the fire meted the plastic.

Yeah i've seen it done succesfully and the flames shoot like 10 feet. I'm pretty sure you would't hurt yourself unless of course the fuel inside the super soaker set alite.

I've seen the super-flamer too somewhere on the internet; for some reason the moron demonstrated it in the garage.
Homemade lighter? Easy. Take two sticks, a string....

Just short the leads of any battery over 1000mah, and you'll get a spark.

The lighter fluid would be used so that the fire would stay past the tip of the lighter, hopefully far enough away to not melt the tip or cause the super soaker to explode, burning the shooter and those around them.

EDIT: gamemaster, your sig is massive, think of those stuck with dail up and/or slow computers.

I've tried to make a fireball shooter with one of those squirt guns that shoots the balls of water. I had something that was attached to the "barrel" of the gun that I could stick a match in, about 6 inches from the tip (that's a little less than 15cm for folks up north and across the Atlantic

). I used keroscene because it doesn't have explosive habits. Something went screwey, thought, and it caught on fire and melted into a pile of goo.
