N64PS2 under construction.

Post by XPCportables »

I have started my totally top secret/non-top secret project.
N64PS2!!!
it is an N64 in an old PS2 case.
The Story:
I was going to build an N64 portable, but I sold my spare N64 to a friend so that I could get a new cellphone, so now I am afraid to portableize my only N64. The problem however is that the N64 case is toast to the maxx. I didn't want to run it exposed all of the time and I had a spare Ps2 case so I thought, what the heck, why don't I try it.
I will be relocating the cart slot to where the disc drive used to be, the ps2 controller ports will still be there for looks and the N64 ports will be down below and painted black so you really can't see them. I hope that it turns out looking 1337 but if not I guess it will still work right?

Where I need help.

-I will be relocating the cart slot, I have never done this before and was wondering if anybody had some advice on how to make it go as smooth as possible.
-I am using an N64 expansion pack and I was wanting to know if the red thing on the top is important for cooling or anything? Or can I just cut it off because it is getting in the way.

Ok, for relocating the cart slot…many people here have done it. You'll get some better answers from them than me.

As for the expansion pak, the RED part is just a plastic shield, but the aluminum under it is for cooling. Don't remove that part or you risk frying the RAM in the pak. If you must remove it, take the whole heatsink off and put a better one on. It doesn't have to stick up vertically; a different 'sink will allow for different positioning.

well I don't have to remove the aluminum, I just need to get it out of the way. can I just bend it over? that would get it out of the way.

expansion packs can get hot, if you'rew gonna do that i suggest giving it another heat sink.

I think that I will go with the 50 pin SCSI method instead of soldering, mostly because I don't have time and there is less possibility for error. I will be leaving the exp slot on there too.

Use 2 25 wire scsi cables, which will hook in directly to the cart slot. Then you can just take male couplers and hook them directly into the place where the cart slot was and hook that into the SCSI cable.
