Again, if you know how to use a roundhouse kick properly, it's a bit tougher than that. Keep in mind there are a variety of different roundhouse kicks, each with their own application. I guarantee you that if you were to spar someone who can utilize these kicks to a good extent, you'd have to do mre than just "step off to the side".SavageLych wrote:Round house kicks are very easy to avoid. you don't just throw a roundhouse kick by itself, you always distract the person before throwing ANY kick, because any kick by itself can easily be avoided and you're essentially off balance because only one foot's on the ground, a good kicker knows how to set-up a kick, it's like simply just running in and trying to throw someone, it really doesn't work, especially if it's telegraphed, a good round kick is never telegraphed enough to simply step off to the side. And a good kicker, can kick just as fast as they punch, and like I've said, many many times just one kick to the thigh (inside or out) is all I need to drop many people. it just takes a little bit of setup.
and savage, if you wanna get together for a friendly sparring match, i'd be happy to oblidge, only issue is I know I'm in my twenties, and I don't wanna call out someone that may be a minor

Well, if you're gonna throw a kick, don't use it only as a ploy; that's what fakes are for. Here's a simple combo situation: Say you're gonna throw a front snap kick as a distraction, and follow up with a back side kick or a spinning heel kick or something. When you throw that front snap kick, don't throw it just as a distraction; give them something to block, or better yet, hit their rib cage. Always remember that a kick is never just a distraction.

nothing really should be thrown as a distraction, if I jab at you, I might as well pop you in the nose or something, why waste energy throwing out a technique, when you could throw the tech out and nail the guy to boot?don't throw it just as a distraction; give them something to block, or better yet, hit their rib cage. Always remember that a kick is never just a distraction.

It can jar them a bit and distract them while the real power shot is coming at them. That is what I get for sparring with contact and no equipment. >_<

Round house kicks are all easy to avoid, as there are only about four diffrent variations. All you do for the back leg ones is step to the side. For the front leg ones, i move forward and to the side a bit. works every time, and yes i have spared people who have ben doing karate for 20+ years, and they all agree, round house kicks are low damage.
variations have nothing to do with effectiveness (and how many variations of side kick or front kick are there?), it's all about speed and target areas.
then they must've not been doing things correctly or found anyone who can throw it like it should be thrown. Ever see any of Mirko 'Cro-cop's fights? If you haven't I garantee he's knocked out more people with his left leg than he should if it barely hurts, and almost everyone of his KO wins are from his left roundhouse to the head.
Also saying karate doesn't really mean much, what style, from what region (okinawa, japan, or some US style no one's heard of) and I've heard MANY many times people saying karate but meaning taekwondo, etc. also, once again I pose the question, have you ever taken a kick from a pro-MMA fighter, Thai boxer, Top kyokushin fighter, or Kickboxer. Keep in mind I'm not one of these, yet I've broke people's ribs with roundkicks, (no I don't pick on whitebelts or anything, I only spar with people of comparable rank/experience/etc) and they are hard to avoid because of the set-up. If I just throw a front kick by itself, someone will turn me, if I throw a sloppy side-kick, someone will take me down, why would a roundhouse be any different, it's just as effective, and just as easy to set up, and quite frankly JUST as easy to hit someone with and if I hit you, you feel pain, no matter what type of strike it is
How about some food for thought, and think about it don't flame first, roundhouse kick is NOT a karate/taekwondo kick, it was taken from some other place (Thailand perhaps?) and adapted to look like the other kicks. Ever see a roundhouse in a traditional karate kata? I haven't, look at okinawan Goju-Ryu kata, or Okinawan Shorin-Ryu kata, they are the original styles of karate, and the kata don't have roundhouse kicks.
