Okay, Im getting a NES from my friend Evan, He's giving it to me for free, with 2 games.. But In return I have to make it portable or Hack/Mod it for his science fair booth (I get it back after the fair). I'm Getting Legend Of Zelda, and Super Mario Bros. With it.
For the science fair.. I can either make it portable.. or just Hack/Mod the "hell" out of it... or do both.
I know some Mods I can do....
I can Get rid of the Toasterness... (Like Open the nes, Break off the toaster tray, and relocate slot, to make it a Top Loading),
I can Also Cut the Cartridges Down a lot (As the board is like 1/3 of the Cart case, meaning I can cut off 2/3 of the Cart case.....)
I can also Paint the system... and/ or the carts After I cut the Carts down, (To add a "foriegn Effect, as all the US Carts are grey)
I can Also make some NEW Cartridge Pictures.... for Mario I could use a Mario 64/ 3d Design and use sticky paper...
and I can Paint the Controllers.
So heres my questions...
Do You guys have any ideas on how to mod the System some more?
How hard is the Nes to Portablize?
and
Is there a way I can trim the board down? (Like with the atari the 5x5 square....Could I do something like that with the nes?)
Thanks.

You can cut grounding strips off. It is easy. Just remember that you CAN remove the giant metal box and mod the video to still work. It MUST run off of 5v too.

some of those ideas for mods are not science like at all like cutting a cart and painting a console. maybe a custom controller would be a little better than painting it or maybe make a basic portable out of it like i did with my NES. it requires almost no hacking to the NES mobo at all. All you need to do is pick up the audio and video off of the other board soldered to the NES and grab power from the first pin of the 7805, and you could probably just velcro the screen while its still in its case and a controller to the front and get it done in a day or 2, just make sure there isnt to much voltage going into the psone screen, you may need a 7808
If he likes funky give It a mini Disco ball that rotates halfway in the case
Or hows about a dark aclyric case that has a laser engraved NINTENDO on the inside that lights up with LEDs
or perhaps you could make the NES MVS give it multiple cartrige ports and have a switching system between them?
Just a few crazy ideas
