After my odd coincidence of a possible sighting of sweebez, a fellow benheck forum member, at a martial arts tournament, I was wondering how many others here do martial arts or have a fascination of it. Everything martial arts, I guess you could say is the topic of this thread!

I guess I could let slip a LITTLE of my martial arts history:

Style(s): Tae Kwon Moo Do, Hapkido, Japanese Nunchaka

Belt/Rank: *Undisclosed* (You never know who you'll meet at a tournament!)

Tournament Winning Status: 3 1st place, 2 2nd place, and a 3rd (my trophy of shame).

Current Challenge: One Step #15 (ouch)

So, come share your martial arts experiences/bewilderments. And remember, no matter how good you are or could become, Bruce Lee will always be able to own you. Always.

my friend richard is a second degree blackbelt in tae kwon do, and he can punch through 5 2" thick concrete blocks in one go, and slabs of ice too, its awesome, especially at school dances, someone always demand he do tae kwon do stuff tht he song king foo fighting, and he does, seeing him link like 5 cresent-spin-cresent's together is cool

okay, martial arts I'll bite

Ranks: Second Dan (second degree black) in Okinawan Shorin Ryu under tadashi yamashi ta, Shodan (first degree black) in Matayoshi Kobudo (weaponry), Shodan in Kyokushin Karate, and Blue belt in Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

Tournaments: I really lost count, I think I had like 20-30 first places when I was fifteen or sixteen, but now mainly only doing things like knockdown karate tournaments, BJJ competitions, and MMA matches

Funny story since you mentioned Bruce lee, my instructor was a pretty big star in Hong Kong movies, and in "the Karate 2" (I think it's that movie) the main villain was Yeoung Tsu (a.k.a.Bolo Yeoung after 'Enter the Dragon's success). Before one fight scene one of my sensei's students asked Bolo who his favorite fighter/actor was and he answered that it was Bruce Lee. The camera's rolled and sensei slapped him around lightly (well lightly for him

) and when asked if he still liked Bruce, Bolo's response was simply 'Bruce Who?'

Of course the above story is simply just something I first hand from the person who instigated the exchange, at an awards ceremony inducting Yamashi ta sensei into some hall of fame.

Edit: swear filter turned sensei's surname into 'crap'.

I do a variation of Tae Kwon Do called Vambudo

Its different from tae kwon do, you dont have to do forms, but you get to do ground fighting and wrestling instead

Been doing for about a year now and im on the fourth belt but its kinda taken a sideline at the moment what with all the exams and all

Also as of yet i havent entered any tornaments simply because im a pacifist at heart

naturally ive done sparring but thats only in the club with people i know

Martial arts is mostly to keep fit and to know how to defend myself fit for me

One of my friends does Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu at a local college.

I know Jujitsu, Kendo, and Chen Style Tai Chi. Im not going to disclose my skill couse there is allways someone better.

I know how to a Style of Nunchucku (Its a Nunchuck, but with 3 wooden bars, instead of to.. meaning 2 chains.. instead of one)

I'm a Brown belt in Karate, Brown Belt in Ninjitsu (Yes... Ninjitsu is the Japanese form of Espionage)

@Sword gun... weird? where i go there is a guy from japan who says knunchaku are two pieces of wood, with rope in the middle...

I am a brown belt in Ishen Ryu karate, and have been doing it for six years. Our karate school, unlkike a lot of them, isn't a belt factory, you actually have to be able to kick some tail to get a belt. Btw breaking synderblocks or ice is pointless, who cares... why learn that when you can elarn how to defend yourself insted? Besides, i think its uterly (butchered that word...)pointless to break things like that when you can't do any thing but show off your fancy kicks that don't work. As your busy spinning around like a fairy, your getting wached in the back of the head by your opponint.

All too true. The belt system in most schools is very superficial, with the emphasis being on colorful spinning kicks that have no real combatance application. I DARE someone to try a spinning heel kick against a good, solid flying side kick. Rank, to most schools, means how long you have been in that school, and that's wrong. A yellow belt can far surpass a blue belt in talent and combatance skills, yet because the blue belt is the "higher" rank, he is deserving of more respect, and that's wrong.

I also have a HUGE problem with tournaments; so-called "decorated" martial artists go gallivanting around with their foolish routines, doing moves that have no true application. Even the art of sparring is demoted to "point" sparring that doesn't even give you the feel for combat. One must feel pain to know how to defend, ultimately. The only reason I've been to such few tournaments is that I only go to those competitions that do not demote sparring and the martial arts to a sport; full contact fighting is standard.

For everyone interested in these sorts of martial arts philosophies, there is a book by a Forrest E. Morgan called Living the Martial Way: The Way a Modern Warrior Should Think. It's very good, and deals a lot with how martial artists of today have lost a lot of the honor of past days. It also deals with death and killing, how a martial artist is constantly aware of death and also, that his study may one day lead him to kill, and to be mentally and physically prepared when that day comes.

NinjUtsu has a "u" in it, not an I

, leading me to believe you don't study it.

Sword_Gun is right in the sense that ninjutsu is the art of espionage. However, not your standard Esp. Just to clear up any confusion from here on, Ninjutsu (忍術) is a collection of techniques originally practiced for espionage purposes. It includes methods of gathering information, non-detection, avoidance, and misdirection techniques. Ninjutsu can also involve training in disguise, escape, concealment, archery, medicine, and explosives.

And the sansetsukon is a pretty neat weapon. Almost as cool as the Bo

NinjUtsu, thank you. Trust me, I'm 50% Japanese, and my uncles in Japan used to study it, along with kendo. Now they do Tai-Chi because of the age factor. But Ninjutsu indeed has a U where you place the second i.
