Overclocking Question

I have an AMD Athlon XP 2100+ palomino core socket A processor. I want to overclock it, but can't find anything in the bios or any programs online. Does someone know how and could help me?

it depends on your motherboard more than your processor. if you cant find the option in the BIOS settings than you might just be out of luck.

i have seen programs that can adust the speed from within windows, but not recently... and they are motherboard specific.

My parents say our computer is good enough (it isn't), so I can't build or buy a new one with their money. My friend had a great idea for a job, so my money problem might be solved.

If you're trying to play fancy games on it, you're basically stuck. However if you think it is generally too slow (web browsing, e-mail, using Windows), do the regular Disk Cleanup/Ad-Aware maintenance. That should help a little.

The cheapest, fastest, and (in my opinion) most effective upgrade you can do is memory. How much RAM do you have? To me, 256 MB is about the minimum you should have (and if you haven't upgraded at all, that's what you probably have). Upgrade to at least 512 MB, maybe 1 gig if you can afford it. (You can tell your folks it will make it run better, and it's pretty cheap too.)

It has 512 mb of ram, and I haven't upgraded. Check my ram question thread for more about my ram. And my parents say it is fast enough (it isn't).
Oh, and another question. In the task manager, the amount of memory being used is almost twice the amount shown in processes, I haven't added it all up, but I estimate it to be half of what performence shows. Why would the difference be so great?

What are you trying to do with it?

Gaming?
Video?
CGI?

I can't really give you any specific ideas if you just want it to be "faster".

Basic home pc stuff (internet, school stuff, watching dvds, etc).
I'm not really a pc gamer (because my pc sucks on anything still in stores), but when I do play on pc, it is usually rts (I have an xbox that I can play fps on).

So pretty much, just faster for cheap.

PS: My video is a geforce2 that eats 32 of my ram, I think it is my weakest link, but my agp is only 4x, so can't upgrade a ton.

Most overclocked pcs are pcs that are assembled with the best parts

these best parts are usually designed for the techies that might just overclock their pc

In the old day, all the way up to the about the Pentium. Then it didn't require you change what pins you send the clock signal to. With most of the BIOS it's almost too easy, change the clock speed to whatever. Hell my dad's computer is underclocked to 700MHz from native 1GHz.

Just to explain to you guys then. We honestly don't know, and I've told him several times that all he has to do is go into the BIOS and change the settings for the CPU speed. However to this point he isn't interested.
