8 bits at 40 MHz might be a pretty decent system. I won't say 8bit @ 40MHz = 16bits @ 20 MHz, but it might be able to do some interesting things...heck, though it's 32-bit, the GBA only does 33MHz. I wouldn't be surprised if you were able to pull TurboGraphX or even SNES/Genesis-level power out of it with the right work. Heaven knows those chips run at maybe a quarter this chip's speed or less...if overclocked. I'm SURE you could get Mode 7 capability out of such a chip.

However, the chip may be fast, but without decent PPU support, and perhaps a seperate audio processor, it might not be the best it can be. 16 foreground and 16 background colors would be fairly decent, more than the NES' capabilities, which I believe is 32 total, 16 on screen at any time, 4 per sprite, four per 32x32 pixel background square...unless you pull some tricks in the code to weasel out more. Still, getting something like 32 or 64 per sprite and background would be quite nice, with one or two extra bits.

I've been thinking about the possibility of cross-hatching in higher resolution/lower color environments that have enough power to support many animated tile/sprites at high speed, perhaps 20Hz or higher. That may be one way, though a dirty one, to coax out colors...if you were using 16 colors per sprite, and used rapid crosshatching at high resolution, it MIGHT appear to be 16^15, or 240 colors or something along those lines. There's all kinds of fun things you can do to "trick" more power into the system, though, I'm sure there are many better things others can think up.
Warranty-Voiding fun!

iam7805! Why hast thou forsaken with me?!

Anyway, that sucks  ... I even started drawing up a PCB! Could me and triton work on it together? My design entails:

Dual Shock Joystick
3 Trigger buttons + Start
1 Meg-Ohm potentiometer for steering, camera rotation, and a basic paddle

Tell me what you think?

Tell you what. Since Triton is only drawing out the concept, once he's done I'll give the design to you to "bring it to life" so to speak.
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...
