I'd have to venture a guess, that either a cart based on a serial eprom, or an MMC/SD card would be used. given what i know of the PIC family. They are not very powerful chips, and have little in the way of I/O. Interfaces would have to be kept simple.
I have seem 40mhz PICs directly driving composite video signals with over 3000 colors at acceptable resoltions for a handheld. Without hardware sprite accelleration though, such a system are limited to only the simplest of games.

Hmmm, Monolith is a pretty good name.teraflop122 wrote:I hate you, because you succeded at one of my countless lost childhood dreamsOk, I'm kidding about hating you

Anyway, I find all of this incredibly interesting. I wonder what an 8-bit processor running at 40mhz would be capable of, when the NES and GBC only ran at, what, 2 or 3mhz? (yeah, I know, it's some strange decimal, and the transistor count will have a lot to do with it) Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but will this console use CD's or cartridges? What kind of color output can we expect- as in, how many colors simultaneously, out of a palette of how many total colors available? How much do you think this will cost in the end? Oh, and when can I buy one?
As for name ideas:
Bio
Plasma
BioPlasma
Rift
X-shift
Gliph
Monolith
BlackBox (ala aircraft recording boxes)
Super-Texel
PICsel
New Wave
Nu Wave (or NuWave?)
iam7805's super cool low-tech high-tech ultimate opensource cheap super cool gaming double pounder with cheese
Personally, I think BlackBox would be pretty cool. You could design the look of the console around the name- like a retro analog/tape deck black monolithic-yet-slim-and-neat design.
The console will be disc based (see below). Most likely, there will be 16 displayable colours for sprites (foreground) and 16 colours for the background at once.
The prototype will probably cost $300, hopefully I can get that down.
I might sell it, maybe not. Depends on various factors.

Disc based, using my own proprietary format (named G-Trax).Corscaria wrote:I'd have to venture a guess, that either a cart based on a serial eprom, or an MMC/SD card would be used. given what i know of the PIC family. Hope I answered all your questions, and let the names keep rollin' in!
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

I take back my Monolith suggestion
From a marketting standpoint, the name Monolith simply contains to many syllables, and saying 'lith' takes to much work. I think a catchier name will be required - I still favor BlackBox for its simplicity and implied meaning.
Oh, and how will us game developers program for it?

I think the two main langauges that are going to be used to program the thing are assembly and BASIC. Sorry, nothing for you C programmers (yet).
Oooh! Ben replied to my thread! What an honour!
