Maybe so that people who have big hands like me don't fumble over the keys? They do that on all keyboards, it's just a matter of if you are looking at the top of the key or the bottem. The top of the keys will always, always have some space. The only exception is this.

I'm thinking the big gaps between keys is to keep the keyboard from feeling like one big, flat piece of plastic. Looking down at my standard keyboard, all the keys are curved in on the top to add a feel of seperation, the flat keys on the macbook like they wouldn't have that same feel.
