5v Radica Theory

Skyone and I were talking about this, and we developed the 5v Radica theory. You see, a Radica outputs 3.3v to the cart and controller. A Genesis outputs 5v to the cart and controller. A Genesis controller won't work with a Radica unless you hook 5v to it. Skyone did that today, worked like a dream. There are a lot of games that don't work with a Radica. We theorise that it may be because some games require 5v. More to follow on this topic.

That's right, we may be on to something. Once I get off my ass and finish the relocation, me and Dan will be able to make the Radica like a home console.

Best way to try it out is to test on of the games that are not compatible from the "Radica Compatiblity thread". I'd say if either of you have Sonic 3 try that as I know that's one that wouldn't work.

try to have 5V connected to Vcc instead of the 3.3V you mention...that may fry the cart., but then again, it may work!

though I think it's actually a bit more complicated than just low voltage

...

Have any of you done testing yet?

As you can see, every cart runs off 5v... Anywho, I can't test it YET due to my radica breaking... again, I'll fix it soon.

Hey that sounds like something to try. I'm still wiring my fresh bought radica but I'll give it a shot when it's done.

Well if you say that every cart requires 5V, howecome most work with 3,3?

Generally all systems have a tolerance of what they can use the carts needing 3.3v work off 5 but those that require 5 can only work with the minimum of 5

But if you input 5V into the cartridge, I don't think it will work with the 3,3V radica ratings. It might be because the more complex games (like sonic 3) use more chips and therefore need more power. I've read somewhere that there is more power consumption when you play games like starfox on SNES, though I don't know about the Genesis. I hope it works anyway cause I might buy a radica myself then...

starfox uses more current because it uses the FX chip in parallel to the rest of the board, the voltage is the same but there are two systems running, the fx chip and the main board then they communicate together to achieve starfox.

The fact is that some of the hardware requires more voltage while others need just 3.3 v so they are trying to make a 5v radica...in principle

So how would this work then? I have not yet wired my radica up yet so i am assuming there is a 3.3v in on the cart slot. Would this just need to be replaced with 5v, aka 5v output from ps1 screen?
