Hmmm Homemade 2600?

Post by josh »

If i Remember correctolly the the VCS thingy for the colecovision used off the shelf parts to Reproduce the Great Humble VCS.
if so is it possible to buy theese components wire them up to a custom PCB and have a poosibly sized down less expensive VCS Ready For Portablizing
i'm not saying buy that coleco gemini thingy just make it using off the shelf parts...
Maybey wire The Cart Port Data To An SD Card Port Running The Bin Files
But Also Does anyone Have A Schmatic or something of how the gemini works?

Well The Whole Thing Is Just an Idea... :?:

You can make an Atari 2600 from off the shelf parts except for the TIA.

If some EE (if there was a good enough one here) could trace all the logic of the TIA, then he/she could go and reproduce the chips right? Like, maybe program a TIA replica into a FPGA, or totally make a new chip?

I wish I could be the one to do that. :( :P

I was signed up for a Retro Console, which was a Atari 2600 on a chip, but it never came to existance.

You can always go out and get a Flashback 2.

As for making an Atari. If you can get the chips for making one go for it. You should know though, last I read and checked buying the 3 main chips for the 2600 cost $50-60. So it's not exactly a cheap thing to do, it's really cheaper to buy a used 2600 off ebay.

The logic schematics of the TIA already are posted on AA. It'd be interesting to do, but the FPGA is expensive and unless you make thousands of chips it wouldn't be worth having the chips hardwired.

Hmmm, this makes me wonder if there are logic diagrams for an NOAC on the internet. With those Ben could produce his own NOACs!

Nope, but Kevin Horton's pretty far into mapping it out into an FPGA. Problem is that the FPGA runs faster than the nes does, so carts are incompatible IIRC

But why use NES carts when you can load nes ROMs straight off an SD card? :P
I hope Kevin gets back to work on his FPGA Console Of Doom sometime.
