CD-ROM Power schematic Correct?

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

CD-ROM Power schematic Correct?

Post by blackbox_dev »

My "GP" PIC-based console is going to use discs as the primary way of storing games. What I plan on doing is storing the games using audio, similair to the way that old computer's used cassette tapes to store data. I think this should be fairly easy, since almost all IDE CD-ROM drives have audio connectors at the back. But what I need to get around first is powering the drive. Here's a schematic I came up with:

Would it work to power the drive? Also, how much mAH does your average CD-ROM drive draw when reading an audio disc (at 1x I assume).

I would of posted this in F42, but well, try to figure out why I didn't. Besides, PICs are 8-bit (well the ones i'm using are), so this kind of belongs in the 8-bit forum then.

Yes, that looks fine. Don't know why you want all those capacitors, because 7805s are pretty good at keeping a steady output (as well as wasting energy.)

Another idea: Use a CD drive that has a digital audio output. They're harder to find but will save you circuitry for an ADC. (Sound output from a normal cdrom drive is analog)

Ok, good. About the caps? Because I can. :P

Alright, i'll keep that in mind.

Does anybody know the amperage draw of a CD-ROM drive reading at 1x?

ok, maybe a stupid question, but what exactly are you trying to build? Will it run NES games? Or only special games that you program for it? I don't think I get it. So you download an MP3 that contains game data embedded in the music and when you burn it on a CD you can play it on this thing? I am very confused.

It's not an NOAC at all. It's a custom console me and a friend are developing and it will run our own games programmed with our own code. basically the sound file(s) are burned on to the disc and the console can interpret that as machine code. Think Apple II programs on tapes...

Something like the atari game recorder for your own gaming system?

Yup, pretty much, except on discs instead of tapes.

yeah ok. I've been thinking about getting that black art of video game console design book for a while and make my own system too. I'm happy somebody else had the same idea. Is it ok if I go sony on your disk audio system?

Go for it! Although, i'm sure our format/standard of the way the data is stored will be different.

Yeah prob. Maybe i'll make a music converter too convert music too play on it. Or i'll just make a switch or menu for it.

Current draw? Also, this could probably be moved to the new tech forum.

I thought you were joking when you said you were making your own game console...

If you want to know the current draw of the cd-rom drive, why not just measure it yourself? Just measure each line seperately and add the numbers up. Don't tell me you don't know how to measure current draw :S

I'll give you a cookie if you actually make a working system with this.

I will rob the cookie and steal the console. >_> So, what kind of console will this be? 32 bit? 8 bit? maybe something else? eh? eh?
