I don't know. I think Sony has always had the upper hand when it comes to the console systems. I mean, just look at the specs for the PSone vs the N64. I mean, the PSone CDs can hold 650 MB of data, while n64 carts hold 25. The PSone can play audio CD's, not the N64.
And then comes backwards-compatibility. The PS2 can play all PSone games. The GameCube cannot do anything with n64 carts. The PS2 can play DVDs, the GC can't.
I believe it's the combination of the Game Boy and proprietary games (Mario, Zelda...) which have kept NintenDUH alive this long.
