playstation analog stick help!

Post by Gummo »

I'm trying to use the playstation analog stick like a D-pad for an atari portable (using the flashback2 board) and a genesis portable (using the genesis 3 board). However, I can't seem to get the analog stick to work right on either systems. I've been using the analog stick from both a PSone controller and a hip gear controller. I did what Ben's book said to do to hook them up, but it doesn't function like it should. Has anyone else accomplished this feat?

Did you use resistors or not? I tried it with the resistors first, and it didn't work very well. Try it without, if you haven't done that already. I got one working just fine for my atari portable.

What controller did you get your analog stick from? So you got it to work without using any resistors? I tried with and without resistors and it didn't work out well.

I used my multimeter to see how many ohms the Pot has and its somewheres around 5K ohms. I've been messing around with it and it seems that there isnt enough resistance so the pins get grounded and get polled as a button being pressed even if I don't move the stick. So adding the 4.X K ohm resistors, like the book says, will just lower the resistance because its being put in in parallel.

I think what I need to do is find out at what ohm value will it ground the direction button pin. I've tried adding another Pot to find out what the threshold spot is but didn't have much success. HELP PLEASE!

Since I was hacking it up anyway, I used one from a hip gear controller. All I can think of is did you remember to connect the ground? Aside from that, up is up and down is down and so on. The middle tab is ground, and you should be good to go.

Hmm, maybe just experimenting with different value resistors might get some results, although the pot. idea is a good one...

I found something weird going on...

I found out that I would need a 11 kOhm added to the direction pin so that the total resistance would be around 16 kOhm (5 kOhms from the analog stick's pot plus 11 kOhm). That way, when the stick is moved in direction needed, it will lower the total resistance from 16kohm (at this value it wont get grounded) to 11 kohm. When it goes below 14-15 kohm, the pin is grounded and the direction button is signaled as being pressed. Now is the weird part... in the game I'm using to test the portable (Super Street Fighter 2) when I press for example Left, it recognizes that Left is press and does what it should do, BUT even when I let go of the analog stick it still will be acting like if I was still holding Left.
