You get people who call themselves "gamers", but the only game they've ever played is the new Madden or the occasional Halo. These video game "fads" have come and gone before, and as soon as this one leaves, the hardcore gamers (like myself) will take control of the market once again, as we did in the SNES "golden ages". Companies like Nintendo and Square-Enix will profit big time, whereas EA will crumble. So it really distills down to what games are better: Square or Nintendo?
So if I buy a PS3 and Madden, I'm a fanboy, but if I buy the Wii and emulate older games, I'm hardcore?

Logic is a bit flawed, bud.
Too bad you're not competent to understand my logic without twisting it. Oh, I forgot; you're too impulsive to think things through before you start typing! This is NOT what I implied, and you know it. I referred to the SNES as the "golden age" because it is defined as this; it wasn't plagued with fanboyism like today. You can certainly play Madden and not be a fanboy; but if all you play is Madden (or Halo, God of War, you know; the games EVERYONE plays because they are just "following the crowd") then yes, you are a fanboy. Not twisted logic, just saying one must be devoted. You'd understand if you've ever beaten some good, story-driven RPGs and come away with a deeper understanding of something.

CTFan
heh, that time WAS plagued by fanboysim....ever heard of a thing called the Genesis ;)? The 16 bit system wars?!? I suppose you mean that gaming wasn't as mainstream as it is now (well, more so, anyway).

Anyway, the PS3 price at $400 is a good move by Sony, IMHO. They will, of course, lose plenty of money (and I mean PLENTY) because of the blu-ray player, actual PS3 hardware, and the harddrive, too, but they're a big enough and well supported enough company to make up the money in other products, like game sales and blu-ray movies.

The Nintendo...eh, Wii ...has to be significantly cheaper than the rest of the systems to be able to outsell the competition....a name change, cheaper game downloads, and good "remote" games (with the controller, I mean) could, along with a lower price, obviously, lead to the Nintendo...ugh, Wii....to victory!

Of course, I predict a PS3 victory...unless they aren't able to recover from the loss of money by making 'em...but they should be able to, I think.
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

I'll probably get a PS3 with a Wii, since it'll be the cheapest Blu-Ray player around as well. Just like PS2 being the cheapest DVD player at the time.

Speaking of E3, is anyone planning on going?
You can't go unless you are a licensed developer. Although you can set up an independent firm for a business at 14 here in Michigan, so I may just register myself as a game maker for PCs (C++ programmer  ) and get in that way. Do 'ya think they'd let me in?

You have to be 18 or older to go. I know because I was offered 2 passes for Savant Productions. Unfortunately, I am not 18 or older, but any of my employees who are above 18 are eligible.

Too bad the time to reserve the passes and hotel are over...

also i thought i should raise another valid point

Nintendo makes the most profit of their systems because the HAVE TOO

Nintendo is purely a games company, if they lose on their consoles thats it, they're finished

Sony and Microsoft have vast electronics empires to fall back on

Dont quote me on this but i bet that sony as an entire corporation makes vast profits overall, probably much greater than nintendo (but no where near as big as microsoft  )

Thats why sony can afford to sell them at a loss where as nintendo needs to make a low budget (but by no means low quality) console rather than splashing out on a super powerful but super expensive console

as of yet i havent picked a side, probably wont. im a PC gamer at heart really

my biggest knock against the PS3 is the whole blu-ray thing, there is already a commercial HD-DVD player after all and look, and they've even got em' at Amazon all ready!.

I don't know maybe blu-ray is the future and HD-DVD's are just contemporary LaserDiscs and destined for the dust bin but I personally think that blu-ray may end up like the PSP umd movie idea: After the release of the PS3 the occasional movie will appear in the format primarily falling into three categories: stuff by Sony Pictures, Super successful or unsuccessful movies, and fad followers.

Don't believe me? Check Amazon some more, most titles listed to be released in Blu-ray are either stink-bombs (Tomb Raider, Aeon Flux, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) or... well actually most of them are pretty mediocre see
for your self

Also there are two upcoming blu-ray players one from Sony and one from Samsung and guess what they both cost literally twice as much as the HD-DVD player and aren't even out yet, and have no real release date.

Now let's look at the HD-DVD line up: linky

Some pretty good stuff in this one: The Bourne Supremacy, The Last Samurai, and eventually Band Of Brothers.

Granted DOOM is on the list to but what can you do ?

and some of the titles are available NOW, and not just pre-orders.

As far as I'm concerned the proof is in the pudding but your mileage may vary.

EDIT:
EDIT: To go to E3 you have to contribute to the gaming industry, and that's it. You could be a clerk at a Blockbuster and be eligible. And E3 is closed to anyone who doesn't have anything to do with the industry.

Of course I contribute to the industry! Do these stacks of receipts for EB Games totaling hundreds of dollars in purchases mean nothing to you?!....

I may be throwing a match on this GASOLINE and NAPALM drenced thread, but i feel its very stupid for someone to release a new movie format so soon into DVDs time. This has happened before, With the VHS. Laserdisc and Betamax were released against VHS as a supirior, but sense VHS was so popular they didnt have a snowballs chance in.......the desert. It will be the same for Blu-ray and HD-DVD.

I stopped Reading at page 3 because this is ridiculous.
Sony will not launch for any more than the x360. The big price estimates and stuff are all a merketing tactic. They release these big numbers for things like Blu-Ray and whatnot but these are not real numbers, they mean nothing.[EDIT: it is a marketing tactic that mekes people think hey this is a great deal, I get a Blu-Ray player and all this power for less than it would cost to just go out and by a Blu ray player.] Do you seriously think that the hardware in the PS3, which happens to ALL be PROPRIETARY will cost anything near what they estimate. The whole unit is composed of parts that have been custom designed for their system. Sony pretty much owns the Blu-Ray format, the drive only costs as much as the raw materials that are used to make them.

CONCERNING WII
Wii will not dominate the next gen market by any means, BUT it will stay alive and thrive quite well. It has the stupid game wand, but it also has regular controller attachments for it as well. The graphics will not be great and the system is about as powerful as the original XBOX but that doesn't matter, the PS2 showed us that already, with good developer tools and determined developers you can do wonders on the less powerful machines. People will buy Wii because it is strange and different but they will most likely own a PS3 as well. As long as this article is accurate http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3150098&did=1 I will own one in a year or 2 after I can recover from the money I spend on PS3. If Wii is the name that they keep I will still buy one but I will continue to call it the Revolution. I love Nintendo like a little brother because I grew up with N, super Nintendo N64, but I love Sony like a big brother because I love the game selection and power that sony has.

CONCERNING X360

what can I say, the the 360 was dead as soon as it launched, it has no chance, it never had a chance and it is a total loser. The only thing that will keep it alive is halo3, 4, 5, 6... and M$'s pocket book. I went to my local Fry's the other day, as I looked through the game section I noticed that the display 360 was out of order. I asked the guy who was working that dept. at the time about it. He said that this was their fifth 360 since launch. The first one they got had a HDD failure, the second overheated and actually burned up, the third one didn't even turn on out of the box, the fourth one couldn't read discs, and the fifth one stopped receiving signal from the controllers. The only possible way that I will own one is if the price comes down to $200 so that I can get Too Human for it and that is it.

So ends my rant, hope it was informative and helpful

There was a videogame-focused discussion at school today with me and a group of pals. Wel talked about the systems and their disc formats. When someone mentioned HDDVD the teacher said "You're in the wrong meeting; I believe you were looking for 'Laserdiscs, Eight tracks, and Beta'".

@SKY umm... all I can say is who cares about the games if the system that you use to play the games on doesn't work. also did you even read my post, I am getting a Wii because I love nintendo, I am getting a PS3 because I love Sony. I don't love Sony because I like short japanese guys, it's because I love the games. Sony's lineup can't be beat, God of War, Killzone, Ratchet and clank, MGS4, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy and many more. I stated clearly that it isn't all about graphics in the CONCERNING WII section, you might want to read my post again. No offence to you sky, I would hate to offend a fellow Kingdom Hearts fan, but I think you missed a few things. oh and I was kidding about the halo thing.

Nah, I'm actually a slight fan of Sony PS2. I only use it for Kingdom Hearts, you understand.

The graphics, I know, should've at least been updated to Hi-Def. The worst move Nintendo has done is hide the fact the unit's hardware can't match up to the PS3 and Xbox 360 by saying "the Wii shouldn't be compared to other systems."

Well then how the hell do we know it's good if we can't compare it to anything?

Im sorry but you are totally obviosly a Anti MS zealiot. Well thats ok. But I got my 360 on launch, im in the UK and its nto even in the most well ventalated area and its never once crashed. Its been on for our family all together a minimum of 6 hours each day but rather much closer to 10. Thats since launch give or take a day out.

Yes the PS3 may be more powerful at logic calculations. Thats not everything and the PS3 is built on technology that isn' even completely finished yet where as the 360 is based off the best technlology at the end of 2004 / start of 2005.

Its pretty much 2005 vs 2007. So we will see what happens. Actually all the people around here used to hate Xbox and literally bum sony up the A-hole. Now they all have 360's. When they get enough money Im sure theyll get a PS3.

Now I just have to say that the 360 is far from failing. Microsft shoved xbox into a already heabily leader controlled market. Sony and Nintendo had even destroyed sega leaving two market leaders.

Using its awsome super power of almost unlimited money, Microsoft lost profit but were poised in the position they wanted to be for 360. Its all about marketing strategies.

I always think about the fact of how hilarious it would be if MS and bill gates brought Sony :O It would be a unstoppable monster pretty much with a huge market share. Basically MS would have another monopoly and would require more laws to be put against them again to make it fair!

PSM, one of the best gaming mags ever, though they just changed their look and I don't like it. I got every issue (except maybe one or two) since 2001 on my bookshelf.
