SNES Controller IC Pinout

Post by Gamelver »

Here's a bit of SNES info I found recently that may be of some help to some.

Pinout of the SNES controller chip! Here it is:

1- Down
2- Left
3- Right
4- Select
5- Start
6- White wire that connects to the console (5 on the controller board...also just 5V)
7. 200 ohm resistor, and then the yellow wire (4)
8. 200 ohm resistor, and then the orange wire (3)
9. 200 ohm resistor, and then the red wire (2)
10. Ground
11. Ground
12. C1 (perhaps a electrolitic) to ground.
13. Y
14. B
15. A
16. X
17. R
18. L
19. Up
20. connects to 12...

Note that the capacitor (C1) and the resistors are not needed...but they were connected on the board :P.

Remember that it's an SMT chip, so the wiring is a bit harder ;)....but there's less of it, so it makes it easier :).

i have done this for my snesps and can say that none of the other stuff is required so you can just wire it straight to the mobo from the IC. great thread gamelver

I'm pretty sure that white wire is +5V, if I remember right, and I think the brown one is ground.
Warranty-Voiding fun!

Resistors on controller outputs are usually just a safety precaution to keep the controller from somehow harming the system, or vise versa

Ok, I edited the post to include that the white wire is 5V wire and that the resistors and cap are useless! Or, rather, not needed....

Hate to be a lazy n00b, but with that info could somebody draw up a diagram on how to connect it? I'd be easier for me.

just connect one end of a switch to the button inputs, and the other ends of those switches to ground. Then, connect the right wires (white, red, etc.) to the snes mobo and it should work :). Make sure you have ground between 'em both (mobo and chip)...if you're still stuck, then....

Well, you'll need a diagram, which I don't have to write right now :P.
